I was just wondering if it's just my imagination or what... but have the Necro postings been becoming increasingly common on the site?

I mean in the last 3 weeks, I've been seeing threads that were started more than a year ago getting necro'ed ... Some ended in jan 07 or even earlier.

I only bring this up only because of the annoyance factor that Necro posting generally creates.

So... anyone else noticing the increase... or is it just me imagining the increase?

There haven't been nearly as many necroed threads as pointless, random ones...
    ^hint^

Now that I'm done being cranky, it is just your imagination.

I've noticed too. It can probably be attributed to the fact that seemingly fewer new discussion topics are being introduced.

Or that there's been an influx of new member who aren't clear on the generally accepted rules.

I think it's the result of a mixture of new members and people in general coming around to the idea that bumping a thread isn't so bad, so long as meaningful discussion can be had.

For example, the Dumbledore is Gay thread just got bumped, and though the bumper was rather lame, it still triggered some further meaningful discussion on the topic.

And I haven't noticed that much bumping going on myself...

Rather a 'Bump' than a new thread about a topic already in discussion.

Garret is correct. I think I've banned two people in the last week or so for necro'ing on their first/second/third posts.

A lot of the necro'ing has lead to meaningful discussion, though, either by them or the posters after them.

Dark Syaoran touched on the concern I had. BANS.

Necro posts can lead to bans pretty damn quickly.

Don't get me wrong though, Lincos has the right of it... better a bump than a new thread. But still, I was looking at all these old threads reappearing and I was kinda going WTF?

Glad to know I wasn't just imagining it.

    Oh, And HBP... good one.

Normally, I'll give them a warning if they've been here a little while. But if it's their first/second/third post, I can't be bothered, since it looks like they joined for the sole reason of posting in that thread. There is a good chance they won't even log-in again, or if they do, they'll continue posting in old threads.

If JKR gives us something new and interesting about Rita Skeeter, I'd probably revive that thread. Unless you object?

If there is something new to discuss about the subject, it's probably a safe bet that you can revive the thread for discussion on that topic. But double-check yourself before you do it.

Reviving a dead topic for the purpose of adding in a quick "Me too!" or otherwise not providing new, interesting information to discuss is a bad idea.

Uh dude, you just joined. Maybe I'm just being my good old ornery self, but, you have no fucking weight in this discussion.

Be nice. Unless you can pinpoint exactly what's wrong with his statement (which I found to be perfectly valid), don't rip into him.

Let us try this again, except, this time, you look at my post, and not my post count. I suspect your response will be different, then.

    P.S. The sky is blue.

I'm guilty. I revived a few in the library... like the Naked Quidditch Match thread, 'cause the author had reposted it and made it available again.

As far as I know, necroposting is allowed in the library. Regardless, people still tend to get annoyed if the post is useless.

Ok, I'll look at your post.

Everyone knows that and it didn't need to be stated again.

You mean...make your posts intelligent and have content and it's better then just two or three word posts? No. Fucking. Way.

o lol im a dik sry

Klavo, he wasn't commenting on your post count, but rather on the fact your join date is Jan 2008. N00bs are encouraged to lurk for a while before making bold statements, or trying to sound at all important.

I've noticed it a bit, mainly people posting gash stories in the library that will always get 1/5, and then heading into the library to make an irrelevant comment on an abondoned story, whilst using bad grammer. I just assumed it was down to new people over on PatronusCharm joining us on the forums. It is just something we will have to deal with for now.

I'd say that it's more the fact the the people who used to really come down hard on newbies that didn't follow the Clearly defined and well established Rules either A) don't speak up as much B) have finally given up or c) don't frequent the boards as much as they used to... I almost hate to say it, but we may need to take a look at whether our 'Nicer' approach is really better...
