Ok, just went through checking archiving dates. I separated them into two, roughly equal time frames:

06-01-2005 to 12-31-2006 or as marked below 2005.5-2007
01-01-2007 to 07-01-2008 or as marked below 2007-2008.5

The numbers represent the number of stories entered into that category in that timeframe. As you can see, save for the Recycling Bin, the number of stories entered have plummeted despite the forum quadrupling in size (or more).

    Category (Number of Stories Archived)

    Recycle Bin (338)
    2005.5-2007: 40
    2007-2008.5: 298 ( [IMG] 745%)

    Dark Arts (61)
    2005.5-2007: 42
    2007-2008.5: 19 ( [IMG] 55% )

    Independent (170)
    2005.5-2007: 148
    2007-2008.5: 22 ( [IMG] 85% )

    Romance (36)
    2005.5-2007: 23
    2007-2008.5: 13 ( [IMG] 44% )

    Alternates (135)
    2005.5-2007: 93
    2007-2008.5: 42 ( [IMG] 55% )

    Humor (113)
    2005.5-2007: 89
    2007-2008.5: 24 ( [IMG] 73% )

    Time Travel (60)
    2005.5-2007: 39
    2007-2008.5: 21 ( [IMG] 46% )

    Azkaban (30)
    2005.5-2007: 28
    2007-2008.5: 2 ( [IMG] 93% )

    General (172)
    2005.5-2007: 142
    2007-2008.5: 30 ( [IMG] 79% )

    Restricted (32*)
    2005.5-2007: 23
    2007-2008.5: 9 ( [IMG] 61% )
    * One Stickied Thread, Non-Story

    Total Stories Archived/Recycled
    2005.5-2007: 667
    2007-2008.5: 480

    -----------

Specific categories were bound to fail. Both Independent Harry and Azkaban have suffered larger dropoffs due to them being fads rather than real categories. Time Travel stories, Alternates and other categories seem to be transcendent in that regard (even Romance).

So the question is deletions. 667 to 480 isn't indicative of anything, IMO (as Tehan seemed to suggest in chat). I'd bet more deletions were made in the second time frame. And that people were more reluctant to have something deleted in the first time frame. If deletions (449) followed similarly to Recycling (an increase of 745% in the latter frame) then 54 deletions would've been made in the 1st time frame and 395 in the second. 721 to 875.

I *like* Azkaban, especially when I'm PMS'ing. Actually, you probably could work out my cycle based on the degree of anger/violence/betrayal I'm reading.

I think the problem is that writing an Azkaban!Harry or Independent!Harry is becoming more and more difficult without recycling the innumerable cliches. There are only so many times you can write about Hermione and Ron betraying Harry, Dumbledore stealing from his vaults, etc. Besides, DLP standards have become more stringent with each passing day, and DLP members tend to frown more and more on anything remotely resembling cliches. Many stories that would have made it into the Library two years ago are unlikely to do so today. However, the flip side is that many stories that do make it into the Library today are likely to be very good.

How do you judge which fics to delete? Some of the fics in there, while they may not be library material, they are definitely recycling bin worthy.

Putting them in the library is a collective vote, shouldn't deleting them be too?

The only fic I really saw in there was Altered Destines, some may not consider it library worthy fic, but i'd definitely give it at least a 3/5.

Not trying to stir up flames, just merely curious.

It is. The fics that are deleted are those with 1 or 2 stars. 3 stars get in the Recycling Bin. 4 and 5 get in the library.

Oh, got ya. I must of mixed it up with Balancing Destinies which is the sequel, which is in the library.

Are stories being given a week - in the least - to gather votes? I swear, whenever I enter here, it's empty.
