I find that when I write I don't read, and when I read I don't write. I probably do an equal amount of both in total, although I have phases where I don't do either. I enjoy writing more, although I'm really quite damn lazy when it comes to it, so I don't tend to do much over all.

In terms of reading while writing... what I read doesn't really influence what I write. I don't follow clichés, and end up producing rather unique works independent of established genres within fanfiction. They're generally quite well-liked, although my update rate continues to be abysmal.

I think the poll needs a 'just dabbled' and 'neither' option, to cover all bases.

DLP has spoiled me to the point where I only read a couple of fics in the WbA section (Conlaodh's Song, any Dresden fic, Retsu's Folly, ACotFoH, etc.) and even then most of them are crossovers or depart from the canon HPverse in major ways.

On the writing side I'm thoroughly planning on original story that will eventually be posted once I start writing it.

I read ~120,000 words a day in fanfiction and write 0. I read a lot because if I don't the chances of me doing stupid shit rise quickly. Mostly I troll ff.net and DLP for anything good, and review when I find a abysmal story that needs to be burned. Which sadly is often :(

Plotting out shit of variable quality doesn't count as writing, but I probably read more than average.

Maybe I'll stop being lazy one day and actually sit down and write.

It's sad how bad my title looks when shortened. I should've thought of that. :wall:

I voted as reader only. I've dabbled a little bit with some ideas, but I would never go so far as to call myself a writer.

    I put Reader/Writer.

There was a time when I only read but I kept getting plot bunnies hopping about in my head and couldn't find any readable fics that really fit them well enough.

Oddly, most of the those plot bunnies remain on my hard-drive mating with cyber dust bunnies.

    This basically.

I find that I'm rather trapped in a fanfiction cycle at times. I'll write pretty consistently until I notice a few stories I'm following are updated. At that point, I'll go read and start to browse for new fics. After a while I'll get so angry at all the shitty stories on ff.net that, eventually, I'll just say 'fuck you I can do better' and go back to writing.

    And then the cycle continues.

^This pretty much describes me as well.^

I've stopped reading most fics except for a select few of my favorites because all of the rest are so frustratingly bad in comparison. Just don't have time to spare to go slogging through that shit.

Which reminds me: I need to leave a review for the awesomeness that is Harry Potter and the Boy Who Lived.
