I used to use µTorrent but now I use BitLord. The main reason is that I use opera and for some reason, it doesn't like downloading .torrent files (starts leaching instead - very slowly I might add). Anywho, BitLord has a built in web-browser to solve this.

    Meh, whatever floats your boat.

BitTorrent clients are perfectly legal. It is only when you download illegal software.
Of course one wouldn't even dream of committing such a catastrophic sin...

Edit: VLC is very good for playing videos but for music, I prefer FooBar.

Adobe Macromedia software, including Flash, Fireworks & Dreamweaver.

I've been using them in Computing at Uni and I've realised how bloody useful Dreamweaver is. Even if you know nothing of HTML you can make a ully functional site with graphics/animations. Plus it has built in FTP accessing stuff, useful as hell if you're making a website.

    For MAC Users

For Mac users who don't want to use Snark as an IRC client, I'd recommend Colloquy which is good and entirely free. Minerva, on the other hand, plainly sucks.

For IM, Adium looks good, and aMSN is under some aspects better than MSN for Mac (webcam enabled on aMSN).

As for browsers, if you're having trouble with Safari (can happen), try Camino, or even better, Firefox. Don't use Opera--it's not compatible with a lot of sites, including some pages of author accounts on FFN. SeaMonkey is an all-in-one Mozilla product--both browser and IRC client.

Graphics: there's this GIMP software that looks almost as good as Photoshop (and is a freeware), but it requires X11 installed, which I wasn't able to do after crashing my computer twice and insulting everyone in sight (including people on IRC) for two hours... But hey, I'm female and French, and I'm doing my best.

Alright question... my school has a couple of computers running Ubuntu... Its not that spectacular to me.

Then again I don't know much about the linux operating system so I may just not know how to take advantage of it.

Whats so great about this OS?

...you can only figure out so much during your breaks and browsing their website.

PS: For the programming nerds to get started.

    Python...

add to this list people. pythons, a kiddie language compared to the stuff out there.

Well I'm using Ubuntu so I can tell what made me choose it.

First of all simplicity – comparing to other distributions I used (Slackware – uh it wasn't pleasant experience and Red Hat) that one is the easiest to deal with, actually you don't really have to do anything as the system does it all for you. From the installation where if you choose so, the system will download any necessary drivers to the everyday usage – where it tells you what has to be upgraded and all you have to do is click :). Then there is Synaptic Package Manager – if you need any new programme installed it offers you thousands of different ones, for everything really, and again all you have to do is click – system will download and install it for you :). It really is “system for human beings”.

Then there is a fact that you have an actual control of what is happening – you can configure it all to your liking, and the system almost never suspends/crashes. Also it's free, bugs are fixed almost immediately, there is no viruses/trojans danger and it's a lot safer then Windows (those are general reasons for using any linux distribution).

Hmm..what can I recommend? aMule for Linux or eMule for Windows , P2P application that finds me everything :)

^ It also runs a hell-of-a lot faster than Windows since it doesn't have all the crap.

A little birdy' told me that the Microsoft staff use Linux instead of their own Windows. :D
    (That is; whenever they can).

CursorUS - the pinnacle of laziness.

I have this permanently running now. Can be annoying at first and, to be honest, it's far from a necessity. But it just generally speeds up your efficiency.

Edit: Windows only I'm afraid. Not sure if there is an alternative for other OS.

Almost as capable as Photoshop, multi-platform and open-source (so it's free legally :D. It has a fair number of plugins, I'm pretty sure it can be made to use plugins for PS with an extension, it supports a vast number of formats and it has pretty much every tool you'll ever need for image editing.

Sorry about not posting anything sooner, just started a new job. I will be taking a look at all the new rec's when I have the time off. When I first started this thread, I just thought that it would sink down to pits of darklordpotter.net.
