This is an old story from all the way back in 2012, but was updated recently. I know that this story has been mentioned a couple of times on here but as far as I can tell it has not been posted.

This fic is just OK in my opinion and the author does not update often, but it is a good way to kill time and the story does have moments of brilliance that if expanded upon could work out great. There a lot of cliches such as
    Evil!Dumbledore and Nice!Snape
,but they are bearable, mixed with a lot of new ideas. Probably the most annoying thing is the name changes and trying to keep them straight when the view points change. So I will give the story 2.5/5 rounded up to 3/5, if for no other reason than at least they are still posting even if it takes them forever to get chapters out.

I blitzed through this in half an hour.

As a story, it's definitely a product of the 2013 era of fanfiction. We've got everything from time-travel, to name changes, to being randomly friends with Blaise.

    Ah, to be young again.

Sadly, as stories go, it's unremarkable. It doesn't try to do anything particularly new or interesting with the tropes it falls into. Its technical basics is lacking (said-synonym overuse, not knowing how to do dialogue tags properly). The magic comes across as a cheap imitation of canon, with none of the initial charm. The prose is dry, overly simple, and without any real flair. The dialogue is serviceable, if a bit too stiff in places. The banter is not particularly good at making us like Evander and Felix, or seeing kinship between them, or even telling us their backstory and how things are different in their old life (or if they do, they throw it without any hint of subtlety at your face). It goes heavy into telling rather than showing.

At the end of the day, it's a story that doesn't just fail at being good, it fails at being memorable. It is painfully mediocre---and perhaps that is a worst sin than being merely bad. Because while a bad fic might invoke hatred or contempt from me, this just invokes utter apathy.

    2/5

Yeah, this one is not great.

It's not terrible, but it's got all the technical problems that Halt noted. I read the first five chapters and then skipped to the last few to see if it gets better. The writing does get better, but only marginally.

The real problem is that the story lacks purpose. We're given no explanation for why Harry and Blaise are sent back in time. They're 33-year-old alcoholics who are given new identities (by fate?) so they can be 14 all over again. They decide to befriend and help their canon counterparts, and...that's it. It could be a workable premise if played for tragedy or laughs, but the point of this story seems to be the jocular interaction between Harry and Blaise. 90% of the first five chapters is dialogue. If you don't like their characters, which barely resemble canon, it all falls apart.

    Echo the 2/5

Also, what's with all the old stories up for review? Is this a cleansing of the library or the almost-recommended thread?

It's a cleansing. Bunch of stories got added with very little input.
