xxxx- Divination is far more reliable and plays a vital part in all wizard decisions.

xxxx- Wizards are expected to be either engaged or married by the time they leave Hogwarts.

xxxx- Tom Riddle Sr was a wizard and recognized the Gaunts as descendants of Slytherin.

xxxx- Quirrelmort didn't pretend to be incompetent and he remains the best DADA teacher Harry ever had.

xxxx- Hagrid escaped before they broke his wand. Years later, he crowned himself king of the giants.

    xxxx- Goblins rule over wizards.

xxxx- Patronuses consume the memories used, making them harder to remember.

xxxx- Riddle took full control of Ginny and replaced her without people noticing.

xxxx- Wizards are encouraged to interfere in muggle affairs, as long as they are not discovered. This is to avoid venting frustrations on their fellow wizards and as such the magical world is crimefree.

xxxx- Voldemort's killing curse rebounded on baby Harry... and missed him.

There's some good ones, bakkasama. I'm particularly fond of the Divination and Ginny ones, which could be used in interesting ways. If a small piece of Voldemort remained in Ginny, I could see her being slightly possessed by him and making the same moves she did in canon to get Harry interested. It would be even better if she didn't realize it was Voldemort making her do these things because they were so in line with what she wanted for herself. As many Harry w/ Voldemort's memories stories as we've seen, I don't recall one where Ginny went through something similar.

xxx- Merlin and Morgana created the Words of Power - spells equivalent to Fiendfyre for every element and field of magic available, leading to a far more devastating war throughout Camalot and the rest of England.

xxx- The Words become common knowledge to wizards and witches elsewhere in the land/world, leading to a much wider world-war.

xxx- England is reshaped by the Words and separated from the mainland.

xxx- Voldemort rediscovers the Words during his Second Reign.

xxx- In his dying breath, Voldemort casts a world-wide spell that transcribes a handful of the Words into the mind of every living wizard and witch, giving rise to hundreds and thousands of would-be conqueror Mages scrambling to use their knowledge for their own personal gain.

xxx- Harry Potter is overwhelmed and dies trying to contain the rising Mages and keep England safe.

xxx- One Mage manages to collects all of the Words, eradicating his/her lesser brethren.

xxx- Harry Potter collects all of the Words, eradicating all of the lesser Mages.

xxx- The War of the Words spreads over into other countries, reshaping the face of the earth every few years.

Would be neat if you provided links to fics showing these particular universes. Where they exist. Guess it'd be a lot of work, though.

xxx- Wizarding word was an actual seperate world where people would travel from muggle world to wizarding one by portals. Wizarding world is a diffarent planet from Earth but it is Earth like.

I'm fairly certain a lot of these don't exist. Of course, many of them do, but that would be a HELL of a lot of work to find (good) examples of each.

xxx - Homo neanderthalensis had a magical sub-population just like Homo Sapiens. While the Muggle Neanderthals died out, the magical ones survive to the present and live side by side with their Homo Sapiens cousins.

xxx - The Roman Empire never fell; the Statute of Secrecy was never created.

xxx - The Statute of Secrecy was discarded during the Napoleonic wars.

xxx - The magical world is filled with fae beings of the same kind of constitution as Dementors. They come in many varieties.

xxx - The magical population is much smaller (in the region of 100 wizards in all the UK) and there is no magical government. Wizards essentially live in anarchy, but also much more integrated with the Muggle world.

xxx - Wizards figured out how to automate spellcasting (wands that can cast spells without wizards, following a predetermined process set by a wizard) in the 1950s. A magical industrial revolution takes place and the magical world is dominated by magical technology.

xxx - Global nuclear war happened in the 1960s. In a post-apocalyptic world, the wizards try to rebuild humanity.

xxx - A Jonathan Stroud, Bartimaeus trilogy-esque "wizards control the Muggle government" political situation in Britain. No Statute of Secrecy.

After all this 'wizards control the muggle world':

xxx - Each wizards has a quota of good deeds. They have to go out and do something nice for the muggles. (Heal them, repair something) And they have to do it in secret. Kinda like the brownies. So they compete with each other about who can help the msot in the easiest way.

XXXX- Harry and the new Ministry manage to wipe out Dementors following the war only to realise they balanced out the existence of Phoenixes, who, with out their natural counter, are going wild burning whole counties in frenzied mating dances. Harry must now hunt and kill every Phoenix he can.

FYI: the current total is 329.

    ----

Here's what I was thinking about when I mentioned short summaries. Keep in mind that this is written in-character by a Dimension-Hopping Harry.

    World Number - 0217

Point of Divergence - Harry was raised by cultists and believed himself to be the messiah.

In-Character Summary - I appeared in Hogsmeade during my counterpart's 5th year at Hogwarts. Many people who noticed me bowed or even knelt. Some were speaking to me as if I was some kind of king or a central figure in their life. Perhaps the entire BWL nonsense was even a bigger deal here? Then, however, I noticed the Temple. I'm not sure how could I have missed it, considering that it is so big, about half the size of Hogwarts. It reminds me of muggle churches, but instead of a cross at the top of the tower, there is a golden lightning bolt, which seems to glow. Several priests emerged from the temple and tried to convince me to go inside, as it was time 'for another purging' whatever that meant. I declined and they seemed to be horrified by my response, one even started crying. Deciding that I really didn't want to know what's going on there, I left the dimension.

XXXX Harry Potter is a sociopath bent on making his life as easy, pleasurable, and free of opposition as possible

XXXX Harry Potter kills Sirius Black himself before Christmas his third year [I think there was a break-in before Christmas] Pettigrew is never discovered, the Second Prophecy is never made, Voldemort slowly recovers over 20 years while one by one his Horcruxes are found and destroyed.

XXXX Harry meets up with Sirius pre Christmas, and the two of them are at a standoff when Dumbledore comes in, allowing for a resolution and the capture of Pettigrew

XXXX Harry is able to move in with Sirius post year 4 automatically due to Headquarters and Dumbledore fearing Ministry attempts to discredit or detain Harry

XXXX Harry kills Draco in the bathroom

XXXX Harry captures Snape, the Order keep him prisoner, not believing him about Dumbledore's orders initially, but go into the war better informed

Not sure which of these might already be on the list, or if killing Snape should be a seperate divergence.

Xandrel - should we also try to include divergences that are the premise for various fics? I'm thinking mostly A Black Comedy and The Lie I've Lived.

xxx - There is a Book in Hogwarts that records every magical birth with name, place and time. So wizards go out to collect them and bring back them to Hogwarts. There is no Ministry in London the british magical world is built around Hogwarts and Hogsmead is a big wizard city.

xxx - Luna is actually a seer.

Hogwarts could be just all of magical Britain. A world within a castle.

xxxx - In this world the amount of magic is finite, and only with the death of one wizard or witch, another can be born. Pureblood families are small, as spawning a next generation requires killing your ancestors, and without it, the child will be born as a squib.

Jibril, is the capacity known? are people born with "more" or "less" magic like Dumbledore, Harry, Tom, Snape, or on the otherside Crabbe, Goyle, Pettigrew (and others) worth a different amount of magic?

That requires the interpretation that everybody has their own reservoir of magic. I'm not a fan of that idea - I think a much more interesting concept would be a global reservoir which anybody can draw from. This would lead to really funny (horrifying) consequences where, for example, individuals have every incentive to cast magic but social/legal pressure is going in the opposite direction. Same thing with having children. An endless, iterated prisoner's dilemma where your only objective is to not get caught defecting... goddamnit people, I didn't come here to get actual story ideas.

I kind of can't believe we haven't seen this yet, but...

xxx - Harry is sent to Azkaban in second/third/fifth/sixth year(Ginny death/aiding Sirius in escape/defying Ministry orders/killing Draco, take your pick).
