Harry and Ron, both 58 and both alcoholics, are sent back to their 4th year and given a chance to do everything again. Eh, what the hell! They already lost their families due to drinking. With Ron being the Minister of Magic, and Harry being the Head Auror and the Ministry's Dark Wizard Executioner... Fourth year should be easy!

 

Ron is one of the most useless characters in all fiction, I would prefer to read a 500.000 words H/G soulbond story to one with this scumbag in a leading role.

 

There are some good stories featuring Ron in more than a peripheral role...

Forging the Sword is kick-ass in every aspect of the word, and I can only hope it will be updated soon. I have little hope, however, that it will ever be finished. >:-(

Back to the Garden by Antosha has a very well-done Ron, though it's far from a friendship fic. In fact, everything by Antosha is pretty fucking great. He writes a lot of Harry/Ginny/Luna, and his smut is quite good.

After the End by Arabella and Zsenya also has a really, really well-written Ron.

 

So it was just the canon ending, then?

 

Yes. The story begins post epilogue. Harry and Ron have failed marriages. After they travel back in time, they end repeat the epilogue, but successfully.

 

Portus, props for reccing Antosha. Good to find a new author that I haven't heard of yet, though it irritates me that people arbitrarily decide not to use FFN, as it's the largest hp fanfic archive. It's not like you don't know it's not there.

 

Over all pretty crackish, but this part made me laugh.

 

I enjoyed jbern's Number Games. It's Ron-centric with the story modeled after the Costner baseball chick-flick, For the Love of the Game.

It's been awhile since I've read it, but I remember Neisseria's Rustlings in the Dark as having a shrewish Hermione who finds herself displaced in the trio by Padma.

My own Hallows and Pathos pits Harry and Ron against an obsessed, evil Hermione.

James Severus Potter, as an example. Which is weird because Snape is still alive and I'm not sure how he was alright with that even if he had Harry ended up not wanted to kill each other at the end of this fic. IIRC, there are actually more children in this one than in canon because it describes everyone's. Fred and George get in on the baby making and Ron/Harry or both of them end up have more children than before.

 

Yeah, it's in the library. One of the few H/G fics that are, I guess. I actually reread it a few days ago; it was one of the first fics I'd ever read and I wanted to see if it was as good as I'd remembered. And yeah, the only reason I was disappointed was because the third book got dropped. Still good.

 

This Backward With Purpose, is it the one where Harry, Ginny and Ron send themselves to the past, and proceed to add "Always and always and always" to every other sentence?

Yeah, that irritated the hell out of me when I tried the fic; is it really good enough to warrant another look-see? I'm not anti-H/G but I certainly don't go looking for those stories or give them a pass if they're shit.

To add content, Myst Shadow's Forging the Sword, while definitely a trio fic, has a very strong and surprisingly well-done Harry-Ron friendship. I won't spoil it for those who haven't read it, but Ron (and Harry) are arguably more mature and well-developed at the current point in the story than they ever were in canon.

 

Ella tones down the "Always and always" bits toward the latter half of the story as the characters ground themselves in the new reality. (They really were quite insane toward the beginning of the time skip and inclined to cling to such mantras). For what it's worth, the second story is better than the first.

BWP is one of the gems of the fandom with some moments of stellar writing. It's worth holding your nose to get through those slightly sappy bits at the beginning.

 

PoDK isn't what OP's looking for at all. It's Harry/Hermione best friend and Ron's a semi-antagonist.

 

And a dick. Even more so than usual.

 

Hahahaha, everytime I hear "Albus Severus Potter", I keep thinking of it as a 3some. I feel so sorry for that kid because he's going to get made fun of and ridiculed for it. Poor little bugger gets stuck with a retarded name.

While I liked the anagram (ASP, a type of snake), I resented the fact that Lupin wasn't honored like James and Sirius were. Also, it's kinda weird that of all people, Luna's name was used; every other name used for the kids were of dead people (James, Sirius, Albus, Severus, Lily) except this one.
