Thats right, JKR has been given an honourary Doctorate of Laws by Aberdeen UNiversity for services to multiple sclerosis care in Scotland. She also has some honourary degrees from other Scottish Uni's for services to literature. IMO she should have them removed for that travesty of HBP.

I reckon it'll be this coming New Year, that she is on the Queens Honours list, probably for an MBE or OBE, god forbid she get anything higher than that,

So is she now Dr. Rowling?

Sorry, just couldn't resist. But at the risk of sounding like an idiot, what is an MBE or an OBE? I've never heard of them.

In that thing you call a closet. Better watch out,
A MBE is a member, an OBE is an officer. The rankings are from the The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

No, I don't think she would be classed as Dr J.K Rowling although I will admit to not being an expert on the subject. She most likely is now allow to place the letters LL.D at the end of her name. Such as J.K Rowling (LL.D)

Don't take my word for it though, I'm not sure.

Wouldn't she put PhD after her name? Cause thats what a doctorate is isn't it.

You will also occasionally see the letters LL.B., LL.M., and LL.D. after a lawyer's name. This tells you that they loved law school so much that they decided to stay on and earn a graduate degree in the law. I believe there are outreach groups that can help these people. LL.B. is a bachelor's degree which stands for "Legum Baccalaureus," LL.M. is a masters degree which stands for "Legum Magister," and LL.D. is a doctorate (which is usually honorary) which stands for "Legum Doctor."

I found that on some site google sent my way. As you can see "Legum Magister" allows you to place LL.D at the end of your name. LL.D is what J.K was awarded.

A PhD is a degree of Doctor of Philosophy, a higher degree than an Honours or Masters degree. PhD graduates may call themselves "Dr"...so no you don't put PhD after your name.

    Wiki says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honorary_Doctorate)

Though one may wonder what these universities wanted to achieve, it would be a good idea to spend some of her money in these faculties.

The other question is, what it is actually worth.
Martin Luther King, Jr. and Benjamin Franklin earned honorary doctor titles, but so did Erich Honecker, who at that time had only 8 years of primary school education. I dont want to say that she doesnt deserve it, just that it may be seen as much more than it actually is.
