Rowling is the only author I know that makes active steps to ruining their series. -_-

Thats because she didn't think things through and create a balanced world. I believe we've discussed this before but the HP world she has built has so many holes that you can do and say pretty much anything and it would make a convincing argument.

I think she started out writing a children's book, Books 1-4, and realized that these books were popular and tried to make it more interesting to older generations while keeping the younger ones still craving for it. Hence, books 5-7. As a children's book you don't need a lot of background but as an adult book those missing parts really matter.

Which means she did not put in any rational limits to things like magic. What are the cost of using it, the difficulties, the sacrifices. Nothing in life is free and the HP world would have been so much better if she had figured out a limits system.

Because of these holes in the world, JKR can pretty much say anything about the world and it could be through.

Well Dresden Files is ranked so far beyond the Harry Potter series in my book now its ridiculous. Before it was like 1. Dresden, 2. Harry Potter, 3. Amber

I think I will always hold the first 5 books in a special place due to their impact on my life (getting me to read) but beyond that I can't consider JKR a good author. I also fear the day of her next series...

Mhmm... Dresden is awesome. I still find the occasional good HP story that I'll read and am writing here and there, so Im not really leaving HP behind, but Dresden is awesome.

She really is going on an ego-trip.

She's just scared that if someone else published an encyclopedia it'll be better than hers - not an unlikely event, considering JKR is infamous for her innaccuracies, inconsistencies and inattention to detail, especially when it comes to her magic system, numbers, and the finer details of the wizarding world. Her style is more to give vague references and hints rather than any proper detailed information.

    "Definitive"?

    *snorts*

And if she wishes to help the charities, why not just directly donate money to them?

Meh, it be a hell of a lot better to publish the book to the public and donate a percentage to charity. This shit is pennies in comparision.

Besides saying something like "15% of every sale goes to the War Orphans" would have been a great selling gag.

As to the suit, whats she gonna do if they slap "The Unofficial ..." on the title, hell she already tolerates their website.

Could this be the end of her toleration of fanfiction?

Isn't there already a published Potter reference book that came out a couple of years ago? If she didn't block that one, she may have a fight on her hands trying to block this one, especially if she didn't explicitly bless it.

I see the folks over at Leaky Cauldron are concerned about their founders forthcoming book as well.

My opinion is that she and Warner Brothers will continue to tolerate fan fiction at least until movie 7 comes out. If in the next year she starts to move against the adult and slash sites, then we'll know that her need for the addtional promotion provided by fandom is over.

Probably due to the fact that fanfiction has more than likely surpassed canon for popularity, which is, in my opinion, her fault anyway.

Not our fault you suck at writing decent storylines, JKR!

I thought she based Hermione Granger off herself? Now, what does that say about their marriage?

Though, seriously, do you see her husband kicking DL butt?

So they say, but I'm not so sure anymore. Not at all.
All I see him doing is knocking back some beers and sitting on his arse.

Agreed. Is this is what happens to heroes? Because if so... I am starting to feel sorry for Ginny. Three kids, a husband with a beergut, and what job did she have again?

She was a Quidditch player, I think. I didn't pay too much attention to the ending, because frankly, it made me a little sick.

    Ginny hate and all that.

Harry is, apparently, as of 2007, the Head of Magical Law-Enforcement. Muggle!Harry doesn't look as impressive...

Evidently, she did play quidditch and retired to be Senior Correspondent for the Daily Prophet.

As for Muggle!Harry... Maybe J.K.R. sees something totally different than we do. True love and all that rot.

...Wow. I wouldn't trust anyone involved with the Daily Prophet, period.

And yes. One of the major problems with books being converted into movies is that 99% of the time, the actors may look similar to what the characters are supposed to look like, but probably look nothing like the ones you have in your head while reading. That's the beauty of imagination.

So will the HP Lexicon stay active if the lawsuit goes through? If I remember correctly she used to praise that site, so I fail to see the difference between having it online and having it in written form with the exception of price. I also don't see a case since it is Unofficial, I would think fans would purchase her Encyclopedia (however shitty) over the unofficial one. I remember that each time one of the HP books would come out there would be countless "prediction" books that would guess what would happen. No one bought those only and not the actual HP book.

I have no idea. If they slap 'Unofficial' on the front, can she really do anything? What about those dudes that came to this site a little while ago, with their Harry Potter 'theory' book about what'll happen in Death Hallows. They were selling that for money...
