As the thread title says, I need a good program/app to record something on my desktop and I'd like to read some recommendations.

    I already tried:

    ScreenRecorder
    CamStudio

But both of them suck monkey balls.

Now, it doesn't matter if the program in question is free or not, that's not an issue.

Also, don't tell me to use Fraps. Thanks ;)

What are you going to use it for? Any demands on resolution, quality or FPS?

Check out OBS it is open source software for video recording and live streaming.

Camstudio wasn't too bad when I used it a few years ago for online gaming tournament (we had to record our games with timestamps to prove we weren't cheating, etc).

What were your problems with it?

I want to record my desktop, no video games involved.

Sure, quality is important too, but I'm more concerned with fps.
The recording was too slow, not enough fps.

Windows 10 has a built-in screen recorder that works pretty well. One limitation is that it can only record one application at a time (not the full desktop).

No idea about FPS...but whenever I need to record my screen, I use Screencast-o-Matic...the free version has a 15 minute cap, and no sound, but I usually just need to record like a couple minutes and do not need sound, so it suffices for me. It's mainly just really convenient and easy to use, and records in HD, which is all I cared about.

I use Dxtory myself. Very little framerate drops whenever I record.

Back in the day (2005-2007 ish), I used Fraps but it was a massive memory whore.. . Nowdays, I use camtasia. You can pretty much use a free-trail indefinitely.

OBS can record windows, games, monitors and more. It's exactly what you need.

I switched over to OBS over Fraps a while back, and yes, I think it's pretty much got all you need.

Yeah, I installed OBS and it works like a charm. Good times.

This is sort of related, so I'm not going to create a new thread for it.

I need to turn a .flv video file into an image format, like gif or webm.

I tried Total Video Converter to turn it into gif, but it messes up the colors (reds become blues etc).

    Any ideas?

Handbrake is the most versatile video conversion software that I know of, and a cursory google looks like it might suffice.
