Does anyone know why he removed them? They were really good. But yeah, there's one story in them where James starts courting a pureblood girl after getting tired of Lily's rejections. And then Lily starts pining after him. It was well written too.

 

Do you have the whole collection perhaps? I know I didn't like more than a few of those stories, but there were a few other gems nestled in.

Yeah, it was "Ancestry and Honour" and not "Death Before Dishonour" -- I got the title wrong, heh.

A lot of James/Lily fics follow the canon route: her falling for him in their last year, etcetera, but I find the idea of James actually moving on after being burned too often and there being a role-reversal between the two oddly appealing, mostly because it's an unusual premise/situation.

Any recommendations? I normally stick to Harry-centric, so I'm a little out of my depth here, heh.

 

If you search James/Narcissa on ffn you should find some good ones. Most will be oneshots but fanfiction is about possibility.

I would like to read a story where it's found that there really is no magical reason for elves to be enslaved. Basically there is nothing actually stopping a house elf from leaving their master other than them being told all their lives by their masters and families that they can't leave - giving them clothes is purely symbolic.

 

Some elements point towards it, such as Dobby's ability to do things outside of orders and the potentially subjective nature of clothes, but I think Kreacher in HBP prevents it. He seemed to be magically compelled to obey Harry despite resisting.

 

Did anyone ever write a good Fic where Sirius has a kid (who doesn't end up with Harry)?

 

Does anybody know a story like Friend or Foe by Niger Aquila or Welcome to Hogwarts in 1949 by Ohyeah100?
Both stories have a canon Harry who goes back in time, meets Tom Riddle (in Friend or Foe Harry is already back in his own time, but his choices are influenced by his experiences in the past) and makes morally questionable choices (even killing someone) because he thinks they are his best option.

 

Not very sure, but I think that canon implies that an elf is free to do anything as long as given explicit instructions not to. However, there seems to be some emotional/magical tie between them and their masters which makes it correspondingly harder for them to do anything their masters will disapprove of. Dobby doesn't disrespect Lucius, at least not in CoS, but is mortally afraid of him. Hence his magic and emotions couple to make him punish himself whenever he goes wrong somewhere. It might be magical, or it might just be emotional conditioning.

Kreacher, on the other hand, seems to be in contempt of Sirius, and thus finds it easier to interpret his commands in a malicious manner. He has obviously been conditioned to work such that the ideals of the Noble and Ancient House of Black are not subverted, at least from a certain point of view. On the other hand, his love for Regulus Black in the end is his redemption, so there is more to suggest that House Elves really are slaves who are magically bound to a house/master; but the magical binding seems to only extend to not being able to disobey a direct command from their master/mistress, and their magic probably reacts to their relationship with their owner.

 

Actually, on the topic of House Elves, I just remembered a JKR statement to the effect that they are tied to a property, not to a human master. I suppose whoever holds title of that property is their master.

 

I remember reading a story once in which Harry's animagus form was a dementor. Anybody know what it could be?
