What I liked about it was the way people reacted to it, believing it to be unnecessarily cruel and dangerous. You're right about it being drawn out though.

I think Wordhammer is talking about his own fic.

There was this H/HR fic where Harry became the British Prime minister and revealed magic to the people. Anyone got any idea?

Holly Evans and the Spiral Path- written (or otherwise conjured from some abyss) by me.

First task is Chapter 42: Rumble, Rumble

So what's this whole thing like? I am fairly cautious about starting to read that story as it has both Tonks and Hermione mentioned in the characters field. Don't tell me that Holly gets involved with one of them? Or both of them?

Also, what's Harry doing in that story?

It's weird and gross and ridiculous, but you should definitely try reading it. I liked it a lot. Not going to spoil anything for you, some of those things can be major plot points.

In the interests of fair disclosure, this is what I recently posted on Reddit to characterize it:

Holly Evans and the Spiral Path/Spiral Tangents/The Spiral Path/Holly Polter

Why you should read it - for every complaint about typical fanfiction abuses, this story tries to correct it. Goblins are evil; adults are functioning as adults from the beginning; learning Occlumency takes time and doesn't solve everything; exploring the Dark Arts takes time and doesn't solve everything; not everyone likes the main character- most everyone doesn't like her at one point or another, including her intimate partners; there isn't 'one twu wuv'... well there might be but it isn't Holly's first and they don't get there without lots of other encounters; people act with varying levels of intelligence; magic is explored and leveraged; vows are both used well and nerfed; money is an issue; killing people has consequences; justice does not prevail; most importantly every choice has consequences (and this is why the spiral pattern is the theme of the story)

What people who drop it have said was their problem with it -

    • Main story is in journal format, often making the structure of telling the story confusing and making it harder to get 'in scene'. Given the next complaint, this may have been a blessing. (I just wanted to concentrate on dialogue and plot point evaluation as my descriptions were very weak. This was my first story, after all.)
    • Main character is a girl going through an exaggeration of puberty, putting the reader in the unenviable position of identifying with her
    • Main character suffers, regularly and horribly, in both physical and emotional wounds
    • Women are raped (and depending how you look at it, so is Neville)
    • Sexual activity starts way too young (13-14)
    • Holly, despite all the above, is considered a Mary Sue. Also a hypocrite.
They're almost right. She's evil, in an 'I had reasons!' way.

Does anyone know any fics where the parents of muggleborns are a little afraid of their children? Not Harry/Dursleys centric.

Hopping on a plane tomorrow, bright and early, 6 AM, to head back home for Christmas. I hate sleeping on planes, but I'll be woozy enough that I won't have the mental fortitude to really dig into what I'm reading.

Suggestions? Off the top of my head, 100K+, well-developed romance (no slash), light, crisp writing would be nice.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember you writing in some thread that you were a bit new to the world of fanfiction, and that you're still reading some of the classics. If that's the case, then I'd recommend this old fic (started: 2006 ended: 2008) -

Taking Control (FFN) by fake a smile

It's a monster of a fic with 500k+ words, and it focusses on Harry's 6th year. It's got cliches galore and has a H/G pairing. I liked it when I first read it back then, but YMMV.

Taking Control was not terrible for what it was at the time (I think I read it more than once, ugh).

Sunny Side Up is pretty long, with decent characterizations, a lot of fluffy humor, and not particularly taxing writing. (It's also Mauraders-era, so if that bothers you, skip it.)

A good fic back in the day, featuring a Unspeakable Harry paired with Tonks, and their romance is one primary aspect of the story.

Full of cliches, but the writing is good quality especially for its age, with a mixture of good romance and action.

Since your relatively new you mightn't have come across this fic yet, most people have read it once but if you haven't I would recommend giving it a go.

Thanks for the recs, guys. I've read Summer of Change, and skimming through Taking Control I know I've tried it at least once, but I can't remember why I stopped. Sunny Side Up looks interesting; I don't usually gravitate towards Marauders-era fics, but the writing looks decent a glance.

I've got a 12-hour trip that includes two planes, a bus, and a ferry, so I'll definitely have some time to read and/or write.

    You could try: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9444529/1/Vitam-Paramus

Or Pureblood Princess/The Quidditch World Cup from the same author. Good fics, more character driven and not very action heavy. VP and PBP have around 200k words and QWC has around 70k.
