Talking about copying, do you guys think that the gimmick with showing the emails and sms appear on screen is going to get used a lot more after this?

Simple as it is, it was an ingenious idea that worked really well and I can see it getting used more and more.

That on screen display 'gimmick' was one of my favourite things about Sherlock, so I'd love to see it used more often... but not so often that it ends up being the next Bullet Time.

I liked it, as well as the way that some of the shots made London look like a scale model. Small gimmicks but cool ones at that.

As for CBS, I can't really see them doing it justice, but maybe that's just me being disillusioned by American network tv.

I would at least watch the pilot of the American version, so long as the approach it from a compleatly diffrent angle and dont try emulating the BBC one it might turn out alright. Though at best it will probably just another ok american detective show with some familiar names.

What exactly would they be doing anyway? Change places a bit and americanize it how?

Modern London shouldn't be that different from other modern big cities, at least in the way the show handled it.

I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with an American Sherlock Holmes, at least in principle (though the Sherlock Holmes market seems to be pretty saturated right now).

Sherlock has shown us the Holmes doesn't have to wear tweed or be Victorian. I'm perfectly prepared to see an American take. Hell, what do you think House is?

That said, while I have no objections in principle... I'll believe it when I see it.

Anyway, re-watched the last episode yesterday. It occurs to me that at the end, when Moriarty realises Sherlock isn't "one of them", it might not be what we think it is. Most people are interpreting this as Moriarty realising that Sherlock would be willing to stoop low enough to break him. But what if he's realising that the person in front of him isn't Sherlock at all, and that he's been outsmarted? Of course, I have no explanation for how that's possible.

Nah. You talk big (;)), but that would spoil their final confrontation face to face.

Anyway, I was recently talking with my friend about Moriarty and his motivations. One thing that I wasn't really thinking about that explains much about this character is he obviously had a depression. All this brain power and no challenges in his life (aside of Holmes) were slowly making him more and more bored with the life.

He probably could think of better ways to stop Sherlock from getting the information from him, but suicide was a way for him to finally end his life by winning with his nemesis instead of losing with the world.

All this makes him more human to me.

I think this is it. Moriarty is an exceptionally smart person, this on it's own can lead to alienation and boredom. Then you throw in his-seeming- lack of empathy and you have a person who has not only never fit in but is very bored by the things around him.

What he actually says is "You're me". Which I take to mean that he's finally found someone like him. Sherlock was the only challenge for him and he took victory over Sherlock, since it was the best he was ever going to get.

At that point I think he figured he had pretty much reached the top and checked out.

EDIT: The reason I don't want an American Holmes is because it's going to be the same police consultant show they've done a thousand times. They seem to have it down to a formula. And they won't stray, or take any chances or do anything special with it. They'll just churn out 22 episodes of mediocrity. At least this show is only 3 episodes so they pack stuff in and it's not as predictable but trust me, when they start stretching it out you'll begin to see holes.

And that's why I probably won't watch it, I'm tired of rewarding mediocrity.

That's been all over Tumblr since Reichenbach aired. The original idea was to actually graffiti the messages everywhere, but mostly people decided to just go with flyers. It's not just in support of Sherlock either, there are also a whole lot of "Richard Brook is Innocent" things going around too.

It would be pretty cool if Moffat and Gatiss decided to run with it, though.

I don't really understand this. Moriarty wins even if Sherlock "gets" the pass phrase to save his friends. There is no 'uber computer code' that can be used to 'kill' Richard Brook and recreate Jim Moriarty. Moriarty has a million times the resources of Sherlock to create identitys etc, and Sherlock would, in the eyes of the world, be a fraud for ever. Moriarty doesn't lose if Sherlock doesn't jump, but he wants to completely destroy him. He's fine with either option, Sherlock dying or all Sherlocks friends dying.

I guess Moriarty kills himself BECAUSE of this, because if Sherlock 'gets' the code from him and saves his friends (despite Moriarty being able to just kill them tomorrow but yeah there has to be a grand standoff I guess) and just walks off the building and becomes a fraud, Moriarty wins but to him its a hollow victory.

And Sherlock could prove that Richard Brooks wasn't real through conventional means, blowing a huge hole in the case against him. Which is why Moriarty went after Sherlock's friends in the first place, to prevent him from trying. He couldn't give less of a damn about killing them, it's simply to control Sherlock.

Not to mention that now Richard Brooks goes from an identity to discredit to a body killed in the presence of Sherlock. You think people are just gonna ignore the fact that Brooks was terrified of Holmes and the minute they end up on a roof together he killed himself?

It was a good way to completely take away any options Sherlock had left. Either way he won.

How would Holmes discredit Brook? Moriarty has nigh-unlimited resources, I don't see how it would be possible for him.

Moriarty has to know that the moment he kills himself, there might just be a way for Sherlock to worm out of it. If it's true that "You're me" then he should know that.

Unless Brooks went to the set, worked, there knew people then he's more vulnerable. And since he doesn't actually /have/ a super hack program he may not be as deep in the system as he would like to be. Years of credit card payments and such would be missing. Assuming of course, that he created the identity recently and specifically to take down Sherlock.

And there is no way to worm out of it. Sherlock knew that the minute the little girl screamed at him. Why do you think he was so worried? It's pretty much an indefensible position for him to be in. Sometimes it doesn't matter how smart you are, you will be in a position where you can't win.Not to mention that Sherlock has been setting himself up for this for years with his standoffishness and showmanship. At best all he could get was a stalemate, and that is what he did get. But regardless the myth of Sherlock Holmes was completely destroyed and he's forced into hiding.

And Holmes has his brother who with everything he did against Sherlock would at least do that much and prove that Brook is not real.

Also, an idea that I just had, though I'm sure someone, somewhere already thought of that - the "computer" code was a signal to stop the killers.

Celestin; No, he doesn't. If he had, his brother would've just defended him and gotten him out of this mess in the first place. Mycroft can't get him out of this one, it's stupid to argue he can because if he could be able to he would have done it.

The obvious reason he can't is because to prove Sherlock is innocent he would have to break the secrecy of his job and probably resign (or be killed by the service, whatever).

And I doubt the signal to stop them was that code he tapped, because if it was Sherlock would have 'realized' it and used it.

I don't think so. Mycroft may be unable to save his brother from Moriarty in their quick endgame against each other, but give him a few days and proving that Brook is not real shouldn't be a problem for him. Without breaking any secrecy. And if it was then it's time to find a new job.

Maybe that's why Moriarty killed himself. Once he saw that Sherlock is literally getting away from the edge and starting to think, he needed to discompose him before he figured it out.
