The newest film by Martin Scorsese based on a book that came out in 2003. It is about two U.S. Marshall, especially the one played by Leonardo DiCaprio, as they investigate the disappearance of a woman from her room in the psychiatric clinic for criminals on Shutter Island and how they seemingly find a conspiracy. Naturally there is a huge twist at the end for those who have not read the book, such as me.

Well, as far as twists go, I was weird, it was not a twist that I saw coming, I knew something was up and that there had to be something more behind it but this was still a giant "fuck you" twist to me.

It is, well, just a twist you had no fair chance of figuring out. The fact there was no crime at all and that this all was just one sick and messed up man refusing to accept reality is just disappointing.

But I liked the ending and it kept me entertained and I had fun trying to figure it out. There were some hints throughout the movie and yes it does make sense, even though the fact that they would allow a violent, psychopathic trained war veteran run around with only a doctor whom he probably could overpower at any given moment is a bit far fetched, yet you still kind of believe them

Overall, I enjoyed the movie, but I won't see it a second time again.

    3/5 for me.

    Your thoughts?

I guessed the twist from the trailers.

The best description I heard of it was that it was a "B movie made by A listers" its a polished up version of classic art-house horror, entertaining but fairly predictable.

Saw it last night, had never even heard of it before so I couldn't guess anything from previews. The ending was okay, but the rest of the movie I didn't really care for.

I saw it. I was pretty good, I don't regret going to see it, but nothing spectacular. B movie with A stars is a good way to describe it.

Don't think Martin Scorsese makes movies that are profound or are meant to leave the audience pondering philosophy. Still, this was enjoyable. Kept me guessing till the end and I felt that was good enough, coming from a movie like this.

4/5 from me though I think 'The Departed' was much better as far as shock endings go.

    For OP:

At the very end Leo says "It's better to die a good man than to live as a monster." I think one way you can read this is that he's not actually psychotic. He's been putting on an act so that the doctors will perform the lobotomy and he won't have to live with the fact that he killed his wife/couldn't save his children. I think it was a double twist.

It was good but I'd only rate it as a 3/5. It was pretty predictable, guessed it within the first 10-20 minutes of the film. I think it could have been done better, but the story would have to change somewhat.

Oo there are a lot who saw it coming that this was all an
elaborate role play session for the main char
after a short time. How did you guys figure that out? The hints didn't really came until he was dreaming/hallucinating.

    @Rymrock:
I saw it he same way but this doesn't change the fact that until the confrontation with the two Doctors he was psychotic. This time he didn't relapse and rather than living as a guy who remembers killing his wife and blaming himself for the death of his children, he wanted the lobotomy.
