That makes alot of sense. It would answer why they didn't find the painted snake odd, if it used to be his private chambers he probably had every thing covered in snakes and when they remodeled only the entrance's snake remained.

 

Wouldn't they guess that something what under it and investigate, maybe tear it down to see whats under it? I'm sure something should be able to destroy it at some point!

 

They would assume it is like all the other snakes, except they saw no need to even try to get rid of the snake because its on the pipe and no one cares what the pipe looks like.

I don't see it mentioned anywhere of anyone actually seeing the snake besides Harry, so that theory is still sound.

EDIT: Oh I see you meant the tap. Well, if they could go around and tear up anything that could possibly be the entrance to the Chamber then they would have found it whether they could see it or not. Not only that but in the process they would certainly be able to find all of the secret passageways which would mean that Filch at least would know all of the ways to Hogsmeade. Neither is the case, by all accounts the only way to enter these passages is by using whatever trick that you need to do.

And when we say it was turned into a bathroom we never said that WIZARDS did it. By all accounts if a renovation needed to be done it would be done by either House Elves or Hogwarts itself and neither would find it odd that a particular sink would not budge, that sort of thing probably happens all the time.

 

Not to mention it's a scratch, not an engraving/snake motiff like in the movie. Easily overlooked. The chamber's entrance could be self moving, or charmed to move itself if the old method of getting in is removed.

Possibly the chamber is built as one of the greatest support "beams" for the school, and as such breaking the entrance may collapse the chamber, which in turn will collapse the school.

 

The other founders would have known about it if it actually forms a large support for the castle.

Since it's supposed to be under the lake, i guess it really was meant to be secret...rather painstaking to buid a massive chamber underneath a lake, and build a pipeline down to it.

 

Did it say that the founders actually built the castle? For all we know it could have been Slytherin's ancestrial home and the chamber was already there.

Seeing that he's Slytherin, he'd have said "Get out! Bitch, i kill you!"

Or, of course, something to that effect. Plus, if it was his castle, i doubt he would have chosen this undeground cavern for his secret rooms.
