Magic is...everything. It's a huge swirling storm, chaos, that contains the essence of everything from love and hate, to death and life, even the sky and the grass. Wizards can use foci to draw out a specific aspect of that storm, that effects our world once it reaches our dimension.

All magic comes from beyond the fourth wall.

Yeah that's pretty much what I meant. I also like the sound of this idea:

    Magic = Pantheist God.

It's also slightly supported by what McGonagall said about vanishing in DH.

One could possibly make the argument that magic is the force which is known as entropy.

The magic itself could be impinging upon this plane and corroding things beyond what they should be.

    Spiritual, physical, psychological...

If magic were entropy, how would you explain the vast areas of magic that create?

I think if magic were entropy, it would only be able to destroy - that is, reduce complex things to less complex things.

I would say magic is a whole dimension upon itself that witches and wizards are genetically predispositioned to tap. Kindof like the physics or math dimensions of speed and time and all of that, except this one is just a type of energy that can shape the universe.
Also i would say that the ley lines are a type of current that passes throughout the planet. how it was created no clue but i would say veins of some metal absorbed ambient magical energy that some beings put out connected and now magic flows through the earth.

There is a fairly strong distinction between invocation and incantation. Invocation involves the calling of otherworldly forces/demons/angels/etc . . . to do your bidding. Incantation is merely a phrase that triggers a spell.

I can see the idea of Authority. Afterall, God is often called the Authority, as he can bend and shape the universe, even create it via his very will. Perhaps wizards are blessed with the God gene. They're not gods unto themselves, but have just a little bit of that authority.

Even JKR confirms that magic is in the genes. Muggleborns are supposed to have a squib ancestor somewhere in their family tree. As for the origin of that gene?

In the Bible, Genisis speaks of Angles and Humans procreating for a time, and their offspring being giants. Perhaps some of those offspring weren't giants, but the first wizards.

Also, the word "god" itself, in English, comes from an old word meaning "that which I invoke".

It could be the opposite: It could be Information. To clarify, the opposite of entropy is called Information - not data, but literally IN-Formation. If entropy is the tendency for something to erode and fall apart, then Information is the tendency for something to come together. Gravity is a source of Information, as it causes masses to tend toward one another, and then for enough of them to come together to creat stars.

Magic could come from another universe made solely of energy. During the creation of the universe a part could have branched off and became a sort of parallel universe. The universe made solely of energy could have leaked into our universe during it's creation. Preferably it only did so in the milky way galaxy, giving some organisms that lived there a sort of connection to it, hence allowing them to use this energy in what we call magic.
Maybe even the apparation spell and portkeys transport you to this universe and back some place else on earth instantly.

eh... Don't remember the author but in Prodigy, it was explained something along the lines of Fourth or Fifth dimensions, in which casting spells created a wave pattern, which affected the three other planes, or something along those lines, been a while since I've read it...
Edit: btw, do not support plagiarization without permission!!
