Does anyone else here remember Homeworld?

We were talking in iRC about the lack of decent RTS games lately, and the topic of conversation drifted onto this classic game series.

It's a shame that there's no space-based RTS games that followed in its wake.

Could you imagine a Homeworld-type game with modern graphics, such as these?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhZQEvg1V0Y (Note the space combat later on in the trailer).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLlAObjR-gs&list=PLE1F9B8DA87D43477&feature=player_detailpage#t=138s (Mass Effect 3's space battle - best outcome).

If such a game were made with these graphics, engine innovations and, most importantly, great game-play , would you play it?

True that Sins of a Solar Empire fall into that genre - I'd forgotten that game, but it also has Civilization-style aspects, such as colonising systems, right?

This exactly, also I think Dawn of War is scifi, but afaik it's not in space, just on planet surfaces so I doubt it's what you want. Still worth the mention though.

Sins of a Solar Empire is an RTS like Europa Universalis is an RTS.

(They both are, but they're far from traditional RTSes-- Or, for that matter, anything like Homeworld, which is what the goddamn thread started off talking about. Which means that your smarm just made you look like an asslicker.)

Aww, I loved Homeworld and it's ridiculously long(sometimes deceptively so) Skirmish matches. Campaign stages too sometimes. I played Cataclysm, but I never did get Homeworld 2.

How about a Space turn-based strategy?

Space Empires? It doesn't seem to be that well-known, but it is reasonably entertaining, and the customiz-ability(or simply downloadable mods) can give some surprising variation. I've played from Three, up through Four and Five.

Homeworld 2 kicked ass. Especially with the "Star Wars" mod that was created for it some years back.

Didn't really like Cataclysm all that much. Really wish they had more games like Homeworld 1 & 2, too.

Have you played Homeworld PDS mod (point defense system)? It really puts the strategy into RTS.

GalCiv2 will always be the best of that bunch.

This is also very good, but not quite as awesome as GalCiv2.

I recommend playing the X3 series especially X3 terran conflict but the game progresses really slowly and has a steep learning curve.
