DS9 was the most realistic of the Star Treks, and the one that has aged the best. I always loved how DS9 was the place where the consenquences of actions taken in other parts of the Star Trek universe were seen. Things like Sisko losing his wife in a Borg attack led by Picard after he was assimilated, Bashier having been genetically enhanced, the entire Bajorian resistance movement, Warf needing a new job after the Enterprise was destroyed in "Generations".

On TOS or TNG, those would have just been moments that filled an episode, then were basically forgotten as the ship moved on. On DS9, they had to live with them.

    I will kill you. Painfully.

    QFT.

As for the movie, I was initially uncertain, but now my verdict is in: Star Trek was awesome. There were a few parts that really annoyed me (i.e. destruction of Romulus  ), but overall, it exceeded my expectations. As has been said, the humor was well-placed (Pegg had me in stitches), the special effects were good, the action was awesome, and it felt like Star Trek. So, from a die-hard Trekkie, this gets a 9/10 (nothing's perfect).

Clearly not true anymore. Revenge of the Sith and this movie aren't even in the same league. Several orders of magnitude difference.

Movie had brilliant SFX but they didn't overshadow the characters and drama like in the most recent Star Wars movies. It wasn't over-FX-ed.

Neither the field promotions nor the black hole/time travel business bothered me. Though I do think it would be funny if Kirk had to answer some sort of board of inquiry in a sequel about the "questionable circumstances" of his promotions, a sort of HP5-esque smear campaign. Whatev.

I also think it was a pretty genius idea to create the alternate universe, since, as others said, it allows JJ Abrams the flexibility to go wherever he wants without messing up the classics.

    9/10 IMO.

But Star Trek doesn't have lightsabers. Or force lightning.

It does, however, have awesome flick-out swords.

Movie wise, I'd say this movie beats the Prequel Trilogy hands down. But when you factor in the EU, I'd say that Star Wars beats Star Trek any day.

I see your flick-out swords, and acknowledge your point, but raise you this:

Feugo wins, seriously. If you compare weapons, Star Wars has lightsabers, and wins. Hands down.

Late to the show - but, this. Not a Star Trek fan but that was pretty tight.

Edit: And yes. Star Trek just owned Star Wars pretty hard with this movie. Sorry SW fags.

Indeed. It was so fucking amazing that I'm going to go see it again at the IMAX.

And yes, this certainly was better than any of the prequel Star Wars films, but the original trilogy still reigns supreme (especially considering that many of the old ST films were a bit shit, except for maybe IV).

    Theres a Imax version!

Fuck, that will be awesome. When I saw it, the room actually rattled when they went to warp. I can't imagine what it'll be like in imax.

    My ears might actually bleed!

By the by, Star wars is no longer as awesome as it was. Blame jar jar if you must.

Star trek is the sci fi cult classic of the future, bandwagon up ppl.

And DS9 was not realistic. it was just the dumping ground of the other good shows. They didn't have any good adventures for 90% of the shows so they leched aspects from other shows to try and make the series better.

Worf was somehow awesome despite being inflicted with a butt ugly child plot line.

They needed that to make up for the stupid worm whole deux ex machina aliens.

Fuck all of you and your pussy mainstream franchises.

    Qualta Blade, motherfuckers.

That's right, bitches. This big ass motherfucking sword turns into a big ass motherfucking gun. Jedis tried to use this shit, but they kept hacking their fingers off because they just weren't hardcore enough to hold a rifle made out of razor sharp space steel.

Also, wormhole weapons make the Death Star look like a giant dried out round turd.

    Taure's list of best sci-fi:

    Firefly
    BSG2003
    Stargate
    Star Trek
    Star Wars

Note the direct correlation between realism and awesomeness.

Gotta agree somewhat with Taure, Firefly was awesome (don't know if it's better than DS9, though...). And honestly, can't we like Trek and Wars together? I do. While I list DS9 as my absolute favorite TV show ever, the only movie from either franchise that appears in my top 5 list is Return of the Jedi.

Bottom line: Trek and Wars both rule. :D
