Here's an update on the series:

Robert Carlyle is next 'Stargate' leader
    By Nellie Andreeva
    Dec 15, 2008, 01:00 AM ET

Robert Carlyle has been tapped as the lead in Sci Fi Channel's new series "Stargate Universe."

"SGU," the third installment in the cable channel's "Stargate" franchise, hails from "Stargate SG-1" and "Stargate Atlantis" co-creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, who will write and executive produce the new series.

Sci Fi Channel is expected to give the MGM TV-produced "SGU" a 20-episode order.

Production on the series is slated to begin in February in Vancouver. It is targeted to launch in the summer with a two-hour premiere.

Described as edgier, darker and younger-skewing than its predecessors, "SGU" follows a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians left to fend for themselves when forced through a Stargate after their hidden base comes under attack. The survivors, who emerge aboard an ancient ship missing in the far reaches of space, are led by Dr. David Rush (Carlyle), who works to unlock the ship's mysteries and return the group home but also might have ulterior motives.

The network had said it was looking to cast a well-known actor as Rush and fresh faces to play the rest of the ship's crew.

"Robert Carlyle brings a depth, intelligence and complexity to his roles, which will fit perfectly with the fresh, new reinvention of this franchise," Sci Fi original-programming chief Mark Stern said.

Scotland-born Carlyle, best known for his roles in "Trainspotting" and "The Full Monty," recently starred opposite Kiefer Sutherland in Fox's "24: Redemption." He is repped by Gersh, manager Jon Rubinstein and the U.K.'s Christian Hodell.

So what do you think? I think Carlyle is a great actor and him being a lead can only make the show better.

You are probably right in that it will make the show better but really all your doing is making crap into slightly better crap.

I've never been a fan of the Stargate series, so I probably won't watch this one unless it looks damn impressive.

    I like Atlantis,

It was ho hum at first but as soon as it got its tv legs it became fairly awesome. I'm sad there ending the show so soon.

I just hope they don't ruin the franchise with Universe. It seems like a waste of the 9'th chevron.

We can't handle another ori storyline.

I'm just wondering how they'll bring the replicators into the show... cause we all knwo they will.

Let me guess the new team.

Civilian genius scientist. Tough black guy that does not say much. Empathic solider that also has elite skills, and a witty leader solider that comes up with great one liners.

You forgot the alien/human from another planet they meet in an early episode, who at first seems tough and emotionally distant but we eventually learn over the course of the series is really just the same as everyone else.

SG-1 was pretty good at parts, Atlantis never really got off its feet and the last series or two have been utterly utterly dire. I watch it wondering to myself how it can get any worse and it still manages it. The episode with the solution to global warming thing was so bad one of the voices in my head took his own life.

I really hope that Replicators aren't in this one. JUST LET THEM FUCKING DIE.

So Atlantis city flew back to earth to save the day after the earth's defense system got blew up.
All in one rushed-feeling episode too. Looks like a set up for the new series.

I watched the pirated version of the final episode... Who was that chick with ronan.

Out of nowhere its random love interest girl to couple up the big D.

it wasn't a bad episode, but it wasn't exactly awesome especially for a series finale. I blame the last minute cancelation.

So far universe is starting to sound utterly horrible.

Theres going to be a constant time limit jeopardy scenario for each episode, you know there going to leave behind some original leader type to make the new leader all angsty.

Ala mighty morphin power rangers in lost galaxy with the red ranger. And original leader of sheppards team in atlantis from the pilot.

You know its going to be atleast a season if not more before the show stops sucking.

I actually liked the penultimate episode, the CSI-Vegas kinda deal. Johnny Cash music ftw. The last one was just totally weird, I have NO idea where Ronon's girlfriend appeared from...

Still, they were both better than 99% of the episodes from the last 2 years imo.

    Vegas episode was awesome.

It reminded me of early episodes of roswell. Before it sucked...

I liked the conspiracy gritty desert crime mystery feel of Sheppard and the wraith. I also laughed at the horatio parody sheppard was doing half the time.

Though I'm curious if this rodney actually made an appearance in the normal cannon universe. Or when he was talking about universe traveling was he talking about only in his universe perspective.

I'd completely forgotten about this. What channel, what time, and is there going to be an encore performance?
