Green Man Gaming's Deus Ex: HR price looked the same as Steam's to me. However, the Augmented Edition is reduced in price to match the regular.

Steam added the Counter Strike franchise to the weekend deals, all of it 75% off. CS Complete for seven or so dollars.

 

Jas is Australian. The Aussie Steam price is $69.99 USD for regular edition and $79.99 USD for the Augmented Edition. Greenmangaming are selling both editions for $49.99 USD each.

 

Mostly it comes down to the people who buy from brick'n'mortar retailers. Those darling little lambs are happy to pay the high prices for physical copies and that creates an economic environment where publishers are almost forced to charge us similar prices for digital sales too.

 

I happen to be one of those little lambs you speak of. There is something about having a physical copy - similar to my desire of having physical books rather than eBooks. But I still can't overlook great deals for digital copies especially over Steam and what looks to be a new online store for me - Greenman gaming.

 

There's nothing wrong with wanting a physical copy; just import it.

The problem stems from paying high prices to local brick'n'mortar retailers. If the publishers know that they can get higher profits in Oz from local physical sales, then they can't reduce the Aussie digital price to a global norm because they'd be undercutting their local physical sales and reducing their returns to shareholders and the company at large.

It's a publisher's job to maximise returns so that they and their developers can stay in business. They'll reduce our digital price when our physical media price comes down. That'll only happen when people stop paying huge prices over the counter. A lot of folks have turned to importing games from overseas [Playasia, Greenman, etc.], but it's not enough yet. Nowhere near it.

 

I read the other day that Paradox Interactive sells 90% of it's games through digital downloads. As average download speed rises and people get more and more comfortable with digital transactions, it's inevitable that producers that utilize digital distribution more than brick-and-mortar stores (and therefore have cheaper prices outside the US, since they don't conform to the markup) will attract more and more business.

 

In my case, not only the prices of games in stores are ridiculously high(Around 100-150$ for a brand new game, especially console ones) in stores but laziness also helps me buy online. Steam promotions just sweeten the deal. Depending on where you live, you can take nearly 2 hours to get to the nearest mall or shop due to trafic, at which time you are likely to be playing the downloaded game already.

Games are about 100$ here, so I was quite shocked to find out how low the prices on Steam were.

The sale prices work on a sliding scale. The more you buy, the bigger the discount. It starts at 20% for one item and ends at 60% if you buy everything. This behaves oddly at the extreme end, where in one case it can be cheaper to buy all 9 games instead of just 8.

I already own Planescape: Torment and Neverwinter Nights: Diamond Edition, but I've never had the opportunity to play Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. Apparently the community GUI and resolution mods make them shine on new systems.

Rift is getting a 75% sale today on steam. Anyone still playing the game? My grades did not agree with Rift so I had to cancel my subscription.
