Anyone seen any decent steampunk HP fics? I remember reading one a few years back, but I'm pretty sure it was crap. I thought I found a more recent one, but can't find it. Any suggestions?

its a genre of fiction, where instead of oil and nuclear based technology, steam is the most used form of energy. Pretty amusing at times.

Super-tech in the past. Tends to be Victorian era but with robots.

    Oh I get it.

X-over between Steamboat Willy and Harry Potter. Epic.

    Or Steamboy.

Decent movie. Far too many speeches, but brilliant art and entertaining.

Don't see how Steampunk and Harry Potter can mix...

A little search in FF.net and I found this:

    Rogues of Discord

With a quick glance it doesn't look terribly bad. I'll check it later.

Ah thanks! That's the one I was looking for. Pity it's been abandoned.

Kind of OT, as it has nothing to do with HP, but when I started brainstorming "logical" consequences of magic in the D&D world, I came to the conclusion that Steampunk in the Middle Ages is the likely result.

You have a group of magic wielders who can only cast x-spells per day, and a general population who knows about them, but can't do magic, I figure wizards would be employed to create technology.

The spells "Iron Wall" and "Fabricate" basically ensure you have a perfectly working steam engine (and because of how the Greeks discovered steam could be used to drive a motor - though they never developed the idea), said steam engine would likely be a turbine to boot.

You wouldn't "Fabricate" the whole engine, just the individual parts and put them together. A fire elemental summoned into the firebox and Bound to it would have a virtually eternal, fuelless source of heat for water, and because it's a turbine, the water can just be recycled.

Airplanes could be made with air elementals attachd in a ring around flying saucers, etc . . .

D&D designers never seemed to think through the possibilities of the magic system they produced.

Well, as someone who followed D&D until it reached the point of mind-boggling stupidity (ie. the time 4th edition rolled around with the Eberron campaign setting), one could say that sometimes they did geniunely try to get creative with the magic at points, but they also wanted to stick to their core cosmologies and campaign settings (ie. Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, and to some degree Dragonlance). Subsequently, they've tended to keep the technology scaled back a fair bit to match the books - which, in some cases, wasn't a bad idea. But then again, D&D was meant to be fairly open, allowing DMs to innovate when necessary, and the truly good DMs did let the magic-users do some pretty neat shit with magic.

If anything, the closest I've ever seen to 'steampunk' fantasy done well was the Urza/Weatherlight story arc of Magic: the Gathering - and backed with the vast mythos of the Magic universe and some truly well-designed enemies in the Phyrexians, it would have made a fun campaign setting in D&D if someone could get the magic system balanced (and that's not as easy as it sounds). A pity the Apocalypse blew that arc out of the water, and the only way they've been able to revive it was in the Ravnica block with a few of the guilds.

Back to topic, I've always envisioned technology in the HP universe as somewhere just pre-Victorian (or excruciatingly close to the 'steampunk' era), and I guess the biggest problem I'd have with mixing the two universes is a single question: why would they bother sticking with the steampunk era when there's a vastly more advanced Muggle world around them that could likely be more convenient if adapted to magic?

IMO the ultimate example of steampunk would be the anime Last Exile.

Ultimate example of steampunk imo is Perdido Street Station (it's a book, lawl) and semi-sequels by China Mieville.

Well... there is Steam Punk Potter by bloodylord - The second war has started and claimed its first victims. Harry potter learns the truth about his family and becomes a true potter while, Hermione Granger is thrust into a world of steam and magic.

Six chapters that jump back and forth between the HP world, and an AU world that Hermione gets sent to. It hasn't been updated since August.

What can I say, with some pairings/genres, the pickings are so slim you either have to take what you get or do without.

    It's also a font.
