    Hi guys,

Anyone know of any stories with a competent and able Fudge. I like the BajaB's story of The Greatest Minister of Magic, which even had him going back into time.

    Thanks

The thing is, Fudge was competent. The way he went about smearing Harry and Dumbledore was very well done. He just had the unfortunate problem of being completely and utterly wrong.

That was probably more Lucius than Fudge.

I am pretty sure Fudge genuinely convinced himself that Voldemort wasn't back. The alternative was too horrible to contemplate, so he ignored it completely.

Also, slightly off topic, but am I the only one who thinks Dumbledore was a complete idiot with the way he dealt with Fudge? He completely ignored Fudge's authority and lectured him on what was to be done, despite having no concrete evidence regarding Voldemort's return. Besides, Fudge wasn't completely wrong -- announcing Voldemort's return to the world would have done nothing but create mass hysteria and panic.

Really, if Dumbledore had just agreed to work with Fudge in secret, he would have probably agreed. His main goal was to keep the public placated and remain minister anyway. I get that Dumbledore was probably tired and pissed off after the day's events (who wouldn't be?), and that it had to be done for <insert plot reasons>, but it was still the worst possible way of handling things.

That's the point. The competent politician could at least acknowledge the possibility that Voldemort is back. Fudge sealed his political fate not bothering with the proper investigation even after the mass escape from Azkaban.

Written in 04/05; not sure it was a cliche yet then.

A Fudge not having his head far enough up his ass to clean his teeth from the inside is too much OOC/AU.

The problem is that we really don't know how the Ministry works. Like, is there any 'due vigilance' or w/e you want to call it? Is there any investigation at all into Dumbledore's claims? What about the fact that Cedric was killed by somebody - if not Harry, then who, and the portkey took them somewhere. It just doesn't seem like justice was carried out. How much power does Fudge have exactly, if they can just gank Barty JR with a dementors kiss without so much as a care. Voldemort being back shouldn't be put down to mere belief like religion - I don't want Voldemort to be back because X Y and Z. Like, Fudge's defense is that "He just can't be, so he isn't. LOL". Like, even as early as the first book, there are a lot of people who don't truly believe Voldemort is gone - it's one of the first thing Hagrid says, but nope, 3 books later, everythings changed to make the plot work.

So, rant aside, I wouldn't so much mind a competent Fudge so much as a competent Ministry, at least one that has actual procedure that it has to go through rather than just one man doing what he pleases on a whim without having to provide justification for anything.

If it had been an adult novel Rowling wouldn't have gotten away with it. But when you're writing children's stories you are allowed to take liberties like that... and that's all Rowling did.

I always assumed that Hagrid was just repeating the words of his idol Dumbledore.

And it just is not true that "3 books later, everything changed". There still are a lot of people who believe Harry and Dumbledore that Voldemort has returned.

He could have just blamed everything on Sirius Black.

Black killed Cedric and kidnapped Harry. Black gathered the Death Eaters. Black broke out his old colleagues. Black is stepping into the footsteps of his master.

Better fund the DMLE and start war measures.

Yes, exactly. Even if it wasn't Voldemort and was either Black or another random upstart, the Ministry should have gotten their shit together. Like, even if it was just the Death Eaters from the World Cup, they have to do something.
