Are there any (good) stories in which the mechanics of the Marauders' Map was explained? Or that an attempt was made to duplicate it?

 

I moved this into a separate thread because I am sure this will soon transform into a thread about the mechanics of the map.

I assume you aren't looking for a story focussing on the map but fics using it as a device, perhaps to get some ideas on how to create / dublicate it.

There are loads of stories with copies or new maps, though they rarely mention how it was made. Right now I only remember two examples describing the process:

Here Harry attends Salem in the US and creates a map of that school, several versions iirc. I can't be bothered to look up in which chapter that happens, and the fic is huge.

Here Harry and Hermione start creating maps of Death Eater houses they intend to raid. It starts in ch. 8.

 

Brave New World was the big one I thought of too. I can't think of any other specific stories at the moment that have it, but most of the instances I can remember are basically just "it taps into the wards to see people's magical core" or something of the like. Although, now that I think of it, that may be what Brave New World does too, but I'm not going to go back and read it to check either. It's a bit too 'Harry gets anything he wants' for me - there are a few pretty cool ideas, but the other 800,000 words are a bit much.

 

There are loads of stories where a duplicate of the map exists. I remember a story (or rather several instances) where Dumbledore copied the map by simply copypasting it: Putting another parchment atop or below the original map and then copying the charms. In another story McGonagal had a copy handed her by the Marauders when they graduated (to keep track of the Gryffindors).

I have seen ridiculously enhanced versions, i.e. a hologram of the entire castle, which appears floating above the parchment, and another covering the area around you, whereever you are (be it Hogwarts or London or whatever).

The nice part of the Brave New World mapcreating process was, that iirc Harry had to visit every room or be at least near it and cast a spell to include it.

 

There is a popular story where Harry discovers that Dumbledore was the "mysterious benefactor" who taught the Marauders how to make the map, and some of the processes for how the map was made was explained by Lupin. I'm drawing a blank on what story it is though, but I'm pretty sure it is one that most people here have read.

In That one, they forced a portrait to give up information on how to make it. Lily made a better one, AFAIK.

I had a feeling it was that. I knew it was one of those older stories that everyone but me seems to like.

 

I'm not entirely sure but I think Delenda Este kind of went into it but I'm not sure.

I also remember a fic from a while back that had a map that self-updates, I'm pretty sure Harry was in the CoS w/ the map and all of a sudden it appeared, then Harry started to experiment with the map.

 

To Fight the Coming Darkness - Pettigrew creates the circular table of Voldemort's mansion and the surrounding area based on the Map.

There was one as well where after the war ended Harry was in Hogwarts and one of his hobbies was continuing to map the school. Basically while the marauders mapped the general school, they only touched the surface on what is hidden inside Hogwarts.

Anyone know it? Hate not remembering stories.
