I thought I would put the basic plan I have for a story out here to see if people think it would be as interesting as I do. The idea I have is that after the end of World War Two and the fall of Grindlewald both the muggle and the magical worlds find themselves locked in a cold war. For the most part the muggles seem content with proxy wars and sabre rattling, but behind all of that the magical communities are much more active. The muggle governments relize that having a secret world within their own is a very handy way to wage more proactive actions against their enimies.

Enter Tom Riddle. After graduating from Hogwarts he takes himself on a world tour of sorts to amass knowledge and power before his return to Britan to cleanse the world as Lord Voldemort. During his travels in the Soviet Union he is targeted by the wizard section of the KGB. They have been keeping an eye on the burgeoning Dark Lord and are very interested in turning him into an asset for the Motherland.

The Soviets see Riddle as an opportunity to seduce an idealistic, charasmatic, and powerful wizard into their control. They wish to use his anger over the parts of the wizarding world that he deems unclean to destabilize Britan's magical government. The Soviets feel that Riddle is an excellent tool in there long term plans to subvert and eventually conquer capitalist Europe when the Muggle Cold War degenerates into another global conflict.

What I want to have in this story is a look into how the bitter and resentful Tom Riddle becomes the evil and twisted Lord Voldemort, not through esoteric rituals (ie. Horcruxes, but as I am writing this I am thinking of a way to incorporate them as to meld this with canon) but through careful manipulation and guidance by his handlers.

I'll be doing quite a bit of research into Soviet and British espionage during the Cold War in order to make this an accurate and believable story. This will not be a "muggles are better" story. I am simply using the historical data to paint a realistic picture of what could have happened.

Thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

 

Soo.. Soviets turn Tom Riddle into a dark lord, so he'd return in the dirty capitalist world and raise hell? Well, that's a pretty original idea.

I suppose they would want to implement some sort of kill switch, in case their weapon turns against themselves? Then Harry's 'Horcrux hunt' could be a trip through Russian corrupt bureaucracy and Mafia underworld (who had in the meantime gotten the 'kill-switch'), with Voldemort at his tail?

 

That's not a bad idea either, but my goal of this story is to end it at Voldemort's attack of the Potter household. I wanted it to be more of a story on how he became who he was and learned what he knows. I've been thinking of using the Horcruxes as a kind of fail safe that he uses when he starts to break away from his handlers and desire complete freedom of action.
