Ok so I was browsing the local store and I found this shit on the shelf.

Ignoring every logical impulse in my brain I walked over and picked it it up. (I think it was the 'gee there's something new from the HP Universe' impulse that kicked in)

And I can't believe she was allowed to write that pure and utter tripe. Granted, it was for charity and she really didn't care too much about the stories but my god, the thing reads worse than DH did. And the whole AttentionWhore!JKR really doesn't float my boat. She already has more money and fame than most of the world, Sirius-ly when is this going to end

Now in all fairness I only thumbed through it and didn't read everything. But the book is completely pointless to anyone not 9 years old and thinks that the HP universe actually exists. Having a forward by Dumbledore and notes "for Muggles because she used too many wizard terms that we wouldn't understand" just reeked of imagination run amok.

Has anyone else dared pick this up? I wouldn't mind some input from someone who might have enjoyed it. I dunno I guess I'm still pissed at JKR for throwing her series away that I think she should just vanish off the face of the planet and laugh at us for being idiots for buying into her stupid franchise that wasn't even written well. Your thoughts.

And obviously if this thread is redundant than dispose of it or move it.

Well, you're only three threads late -- go look at the very bottom of the page, where it says "Similar Threads" ... (but perhaps a new thread is better than bumping an old one).

Er, yes. Lol. I mean, what did you expect? We already knew that the tales were fairytales. I read them (I think they were online at Amazon at one time, before she decided to publish them), and enjoyed them -- as fairytales. Like I do with any other, from Grimm or Andersen.

In fact, I liked them a lot more than DH (where the Tale of the Three Brothers was one of the sparse highlights to me as well); she could really start writing fairytales.

Technically this thread is different as the book went on sale December 4th and the last entry in the previous threads was early August. The book is actually on the shelves now and I wanted to know peoples opinions of it. And you gave me yours. Thanks.

The stories themselves weren't published on Amazon, just Amazon's summaries of the stories. But yeah, agreed with Sesc: unlike the main HP series, Tales of Beedle the Bard really is a book for kids. I pre-ordered mine back in August, but rather stupidly I used my home address and not my uni one, so I haven't read it yet.

I doubt I'll buy it, but not because I care about the fact that it's a kiddie book.

It may seem strange, but I kinda feel bad for the 5 or 6 people who got the handwritten version of the Tales - thinking that they got something singularly unique and special, only to have it mass published barely a year later. There's no doubt that they probably signed a hefty non-disclosure agreement as well, so to have this happen is kind of a slap in the face. Ah well, at least Rowling won't profit from the sale of the books.

It would be funny if a few of the original recipients were afraid to even open their books, and end up getting the Amazon.com copy to finally read the stories.

And it will be a movie.

And you will still watch it.

Doesn't that make you angry? That despite knowing that it is trash you will still participate in the very capitalistic ritual of imbibing something just because it has been created.

*Shrug* Can't speak for anyone else here, but at least I won't pay for this bit of indulgence (and subsequent self-loathing) :awesome

Heh, the closest I've ever gotten to paying for a HP film is through Sky TV. Also, I'll not be buying the fairy tales. Charitable though it may be, I just don't care about canon that much any more.

    -shrugs-

Read it, most were even somewhat enjoyable. it's mostly targeted toward a younger audience, but I think some of the stories would go over their head, and 'the warlocks hairy heart' is actually a rather gruesome tale. If you go back to some of the pre-Disney versions of Aesop and the Brothers Grimm, a bit like that. not quite as good, but favorably comparable. I dunno if i'd buy it, but reading someone elses copy is worth the time. by DLP story standards about a third of them might make it into the library.
