I'm not sure if these are very well known, but for the past 4 or so years, Sky One has released live-action adaptations of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Unlike most movie adaptations, I believe these... don't fail. Terry Pratchett is actually strongly involved in all of these movies, and appears as a cameo in all of them.

The first one was an adaptation of Hogfather, the second was Colour of Magic, and the third - released less than 2 weeks ago - was Going Postal. I thought they were all amazing, even though Colour of Magic cut out quite a bit of material. They're not low-budget movies, either; The first had Christopher Lee and the second had Tim Curry.

Has anyone else seen them? Heard of them? If not, and if you have any interest in Pratchett's works, you should find them - they're really faithful to the source material.

I heard of Hogfather when it first came out but never actually sat down to watch it.

Hogfather was pretty decent (although Christopher Lee wasn't in it; Ian Richardson was Death in Hogfather, Lee in Colour of Magic), but I thought Colour of Magic was pretty poor even without taking the changes into account. I haven't seen Going Postal yet, but the trailer looked great - definitely looking forward to seeing it!

Hogfather and Colour of Magic were much, much better than I expected for a movie-version, considering the horror stories Pterry has told in the past of his dealings with Hollywood. Haven't seen Going Postal yet, but it's very high on my to-do list.

Seen the Hogfather, which was OK and I've seen posters for Going Postal, didn't know they had done Colour of Magic though. I always though it would be pretty hard to make a decent movie out of the Discworld books, just because so much of it rests on the characters and Pratchetts special brand of humour.

Have seen Hogfather and Colour of Magic. I liked them; Hogfather was probably a bit better, but it was a better book (CoM isn't bad, but not as good as his later work) and easier to adapt. Also more Death has to be better.

    This. So very much.
I don't hold out a lot of hope that it'd ever happen, or that it'd be as good as the book deserves, but the potential for pure awesome is immense.

I've seen all three; The first two were good, but I preferred the Colour of Magic to Hogfather, and neither were anywhere near as good as the books. Going Postal, however, was brilliant. I really recommend you watch it if you liked the books.

I had such a lot of trouble trying to watch it, though - it was like a curse. Whenever I saw it on tv something would interrupt me. What are the chances of the cat coming in injured from a fight or the uncle you see once in every five years coming in for a surprise visit? During the first twenty minutes of Going Postal, apparently 100% likely!

I really hope they're going to do one about the Watch next, or Good Omens. All Watch books are my favourites, really: can't get enough of Vimes.

Bump for great justice and new info.

    Adaptation of Unseen Academicals announced.

I'm a little surprised, I'll admit. I would have thought that the logical choice would have been 'Making Money' - a direct sequel to their best adaptation yet, relatively easy to do (nothing much in the way of effects, bar a few more golems), a great cast already assembled, and somewhat topical.

That said, if they finally do the right thing and cast Brian Blessed as Ridcully, I will be ridiculously happy.
