Eh, don't think so. As far as godlike villains go, Thanos is not very high on the list. He's strong, sure, but I dont think he could take the Hulk, never mind the whole team.
    Could be wrong though.

Strength: Since he's an Eternal that puts him at Thor-like power. Hulk and Thor could kick his butt, physically.

Other: Thanos always has an edge, like the Infinity Gauntlet, Cosmic Cube, or something so the other Avengers have something to fight. So yes, the Avengers could take him.

Something else to keep in mind: The Avengers roster is ever-changing. They add magic users, mutants, etc to the mix. So I wouldn't expect the team to be exactly the same come Avengers II. If I was on the Marvel creative team, I'd pop out another movie or two with other characters and then add them to the mix.

Yeah, I'm hoping for one or two new characters to make an appearance, but I'm fairly certain I read something somewhere not too long ago (credible source, huh?) that stated why, in the movies at least, we wouldn't see the Avengers crossover with, say, the X-men and mutants or Spider-Man, because different film houses own the rights.

Edit: Wow, that was one long run-on sentence. But yeah, it's all Marvel universe--but when it comes to movies, not so much, apparently.

Dr. Strange is pretty much the only (Avenger) magic user that could pull off their own movie. The others were mutants second-raters (Dr. Druid).

The script for the proposed movie was finished in February, so who knows if or when that would be completed or even eligible for inclusion in the universe. I'd like to see some of the mutants there. Scarlet Witch, Beast, et al. Wanda would be able to pull off her own movie and they wouldn't have to call her a mutant even.

Thanos's problem is his ego. He is hella powerful, and with the Infinity Gauntlet, he could just wave his hand and the Avengers would go the fuck away. But he is so powerful that he slips into arrogance and hubris quite easily. Been a long while since I read Infinity Gauntlet/Infinity Wars in comics, but I remember Thanos handicapping himself and treating fighting the Avengers like a game. It's why he lost.

The thing is for most villains, the more powerful they are, they slip into delusions of godhood and invincibility quite easily. The body may be strong, but the mind is weak. It's how the heroes can find chinks in their armor and defeat them.

    Thoughts?

Seems that Avengers totally annihilated any previous records and made 200m in their first weekend in USA. About a month ago there was a question of the next films' order (already confirmed - Iron Man 3 (2013), Thor 2 (2013) and Captain America 2 (2014)), but I think this pretty much seals 2014 as a release date of the sequel even if Evans will have twice as much work to do.

To the Thanos power level question, he has been beaten by Galactus, Squirrel girl (for the lulz), Odin the All-Father, Adam Warlock, Drax the Destroyer, etc. He has also beaten characters such as the Beyonder and the Silver Surfer. However he cannot die, having being removed permanently from the realm of Death.
In the Infinity Gauntlet storyline however, armed with IG, he has easily beaten and imprisoned the Fantastic 4, the X-men, Galactus, Kronos, the Stranger, Adam Warlock and Eternity. He is very smart (far more than say Banner and Stark) and only loses a lot of times due to the fact that he believes he is unworthy of universal domination, on a subconscious level. He should be able to curbstomp most of the Avengers easily if armed with the IG, with only Hulk and Thor offering a conceivable threat.

Captain Britain, wielder of the Amulet of Right and the Star Sceptre, Son of Otherworld and member of the inter dimensional Captain Britain Corps would disagree with you.

And there'd be the positive of hearing Alan Moore bitch about yet another one of his creations becoming a movie.

Though failing that, I'd love a general MI-13 movie. :sherlock:

It's fine if you hate, Heather. By Captain's Britain's rules, there's an alternate world out there where you're his biggest fan. :p

Couple things I saw while perusing to comment on:

None of the jokes fell flat for me, they all landed perfectly. But I'm a bit of a Whedon fanboy and they fit his humor spot on. Even the little ones worked for me.

Bruce Banner wasn't done by Edward Norton because Norton was a a giant baby about sharing screen time, the direction of the movie, etc. etc. Add that on to demanding way too much money for a movie with such a ensemble cast and they basically told him we'll find someone else. Ruffalo did a great job bridging the gap between too sullen/withdrawn while still maintaining that very Banner demeanor that makes him such a interesting character.

Don't expect a change in the cast of heroes. This movie did too well. You may see minor characters thrown in such as how they did with X-Men. But that'll be the extent.

I'll be seeing this again. Easily the funniest action movie I've seen in I don't know how long. Even the first half hour or so which crawled by to begin felt much better after the movie finished and I could really analyze the change in pace and how the storytelling's tempo increased with the plot.

The Wizard of Oz reference and Captain's "I got it" plus the comic card jokes about Captain really hit me unexpectedly. I had the Hulk's crushing of Loki lulz moment ruined for me so I expected it but still felt like bursting from laughing so hard at it.

EDIT: Spider-Man is the perfect example of how different studios are about releasing Marvel movies. They don't even share a distributor with The Avengers. Paramount would need to pick a character unused so far if they wished to add someone in the sequel.

Thanks for educating me on Thanos's strength, the only thing I saw off google at first was the Infinity stuff and how many people he defeated/killed in that saga. Now that I understand he's not usually that powerful it makes more sense.

Well Thanos isn't usually that powerful but he's still powerful enough to seriously challenge that Avengers team by himself. His physical strength(and other physical powers) is around Thor's and Hulk's, he has energy manipulating powers on a cosmic level, and he's ridiculously smart even by Marvel standards.

Movie was epic. Unfortunately there were clappers in the audience. First time I've come across them. Still Hulk was killing me even if he only got one real line again.

Saw it last night, thought it was pretty awesome.

I loved it for what it was. The humor definitely made the movie as far as I'm concerned.

Just thought I'd throw this in as it pertains to the one of the original members of the Avengers.

    Ant-Man

The script's been written, but seriously? Ant-Man?

I'd much rather prefer a Wasp movie instead of a movie about a guy that controls ants with a goofy looking helmet. It's gotta be Ultimate Wasp though, one that lays eggs and eats the occasional bug or two.

To be fair, Heather, it's Ant-Man from Edgar Wright, the guy who did Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim. As much as I think Ant-Man is a hero that has absolutely no damn business being anywhere near the movie screen, Edgar Wright has never written or directed a bad movie. I'd say he's got a shot of making it work.

Just caught this today, and thought it was great.

I enjoyed the nerd friendship between Banner and Stark. Honestly I was a bit surprised at how quickly Stark turned into a team player, but I suppose he was pretty pissed at Loki by that point.

Who the fuck was that shadow council jerking Fury's chain and why were they in my Avengers? Every time they popped up it pissed me off.

I would have enjoyed the final secret scene more if some moron in the back hadn't been laughing hysterically for the entirety of it. I wanted to chuckle, but had to hold it in lest I come closer to his level of annoying.

Just found this on reddit, and it's hilarious. US military scales back cooperation with Marvel due to a lack of realism in the Avengers.

    My favourite part:

    Saw it. Loved it.

The only problem I had with it was that I think it needed more Hawkeye. I understand that he couldn't have a lot for the first half, but I'd have liked one character scene for Hawkeye with someone besides Black Widow.

I hope he gets a spinoff. Would be epic.
