Has anyone mentioned LOTR: Return of the King? It's a fucking amazing game, esp if you have a friend to coop with you. Two Towers also deserves a nod.

Other than that, try the Sly Cooper series. I loved it.

I'll second San Andreas, Battlefront II and Shadow of the Colossus.

Silent Hill was the first horror game I ever played and I loved and hated it in equal measure.

Then SSX tricky as well. So much awesome.

At least, up until That Moment. I don't have a whole lot to add that hasn't been mentioned, aside from Dragon Quest VIII. Unless it was and I missed it. Suikoden III and V also (IV not so much).

    Oh, and everything Disgaea.

For survival horror, I'd really recommend the Forbidden Siren games. They can be quite difficult to get into, they're very punishing and have the traditional clunkiness of proper oldschool horror games, but they have atmosphere that is only matched by Silent Hill, and the main 'monsters' you face are extremely creepy.

And speaking of Silent Hill, despite what people say you should not skip the 4th game in the series. It tries to do a lot of new things and step away from the established formula of the series, and some of these ideas didn't work out terrible well, but it's still a fantastic game and my favourite of the series after 2.

And while it's not horror, on the of chance that you haven't played it you should definitely pick up Hitman Blood Money. Easily one of the most entertaining games I've ever played; you can spend hours in a single level just figuring out all the different ways to take out your target, it never gets boring.

I haven't seen Resident Evil 4 and Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 mentioned here. Hell, I could list probably more than twenty games that alone are worth justifying owning a PS2. Such a great console.

Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec, which is the only racing game you'll ever need for PS2.

You know there are some reviews of PS2 games that can be located here.

Now that that's out of the way. I recommend Kingdom Hearts, SMT: Nocturne, Persona 3 FES, Dragon Quest VIII, the Ratchet and Clank games, the .hack//G.U. games. Mostly what I'd recommend has been recommended already.

Jak 2 and 3 are some of my favourite games ever. Also the Sly Racoon series. Timesplitters was a blast, my favourite being 3 (it's widely regarded as having lost a lot of its edge, having been bought by EA, but as a primarily solo player the bigger focus on single player was a big plus to me). The Burnout games remain the only racing games I've particularly enjoyed. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was probably my favourite - I played it so much I'd practically memorised the first half of the game. Can't overlook Beyond Good and Evil either.
