Just because anything about fantasy would have been banned from the Dursley household doesn't mean Harry could never have heard of anything fictional.

While I agree with your points about Sirius not being known, and somewhat agree about how disagreeable to his personality it is for Voldemort to have introduced himself as Tom Riddle (despite the fact that fanfiction thrives on making it's characters non-canon), I have to say that you saying it's not possible for Harry to have heard or read about phoenixes is not entirely realistic.
