Good luck becoming a career scientist with that attitude towards plagiarism.

You know what they say, copy from one and it's plagiarism; copy from many and it's "research".
And there's a grain of truth in it as well.

... the fuck? This case is so clear cut it isn't even funny. She copied it word for word and acknowledged that herself: Plagiarism. Do it here and see how fast you get banned.

"seeing a good concept and the trying to implement it better" ... just what. Some of you can't possibly be serious :|

I read through this, and I gotta say, I think a lot of that was unwarranted. DLP was a much harsher place back in 2007.

The similarity in the stories is undeniable, to the point that it's obvious that Kurinoone did... well, plagiarize, let's not dance around the word. I don't think what she did was right, but at the same time I don't think it's a horrible enough offense to dislike the work itself. In other words, while I might condemn the author, I don't condemn the work she produced.

I read both stories at around the same time (can't remember which I read first) and, in my opinion, Kurnoone did a much better job with it, so even if the idea was not originally hers, she had enough of an original idea to make me like her story, which is more than I can say for PDO's. Further, Kurnoone has written two sequels to her story that are original and, in fact, are decent stories in and of themselves.

I think her trilogy should be in the Library... but then again, I think the same of Methods of Rationality. It's probably safe to say that my tastes differ sometimes with the rest of DLP, but then again, Silens likes Lily/Snape, so DLP's tastes aren't exactly uniform to begin with. To each their own.

I hope there will never come a day when DLP un-harshes to the extent that plagiarism is acceptable.

Sure, Darkness Within is a popular story, but everything about it is average. The writing is unremarkable, the dark!harry plot is generic, and the characters are forgettable. It's Harry/Ginny and plagiarized to boot.

I fully realize that not everything that achieves Library status is creme-of-the-crop fanfiction, but this flaming turd's admission shouldn't even be a discussion.

My only comment on the matter: I read Kurinoone's series a long time ago, and never knew she had plagiarized. She simply called it 'being inspired by'. That definitely bugs me. She should have been straight forward and said that she copied the early parts of the story (or, yknow, rewritten it completely).

However, she HAS written two sequels to the original story, and finished the entire series. She is working on a rewrite, even.

That sort of commitment to her fics is commendable IMO, and something very few fanfic authors maintain. Overall, it evens out, and I'm returned to the glorious state of not giving a fuck. Not Library material in any case, though I don't think it deserves such ardent vitriol.

I dunno about either the "original" or the "inspired" story, and even though I've no doubt you already know this, it bears repeating: "Ardent vitriol" is the default setting at DLP - the DLP ground state, if you will.

Haha. Who cares if it's plagiarised? It's fucking awful.

    And that's the rewrite.

Meaning she already had a million words' worth of experience from the original trilogy when she started it. Only to produce what enembee quoted.

I'm sorry, but this is a lack of talent so unfortunate and severe that I have no words. I'm more saddened by how shitty her writing remains after years than offended by her now ancient plagiarism transgression.

And the thread deserves to be locked.

She's written more shitty fanfiction than I've probably written words in my life. I'm not sure if this makes me feel good or bad.

This is a good example of a question that should go here.

I haven't read the rewrite, but I don't see how what enembee quoted is "fucking awful." It seems like decent - though not spectacular - writing to me.

Y'know, until this thread, I never understood why mknote had such a bad rap with Vash(or was it Mid?).

Suddenly I find it all-too understandable.
