I'm not sure about the rest of the site or the people that read it, but the article seemed sound from what I skimmed. I originally thumbed the post for the video. IA put on another stream and got together with that Sargon of Akkad and another guy ("King of /pol/" I think it said -- he seemed reasonable enough despite the name association), and that was an entertaining and informative listen for a few hours.

I saw this, laughed and dismissed it when you originally posted it, but since you actually had thumbs up for this post, and at least one person read it and was even slightly swayed by the contents, honestly I have to make a few points about this 'article'.

This is as much a hack piece as all that shit that came about Gamers being dead. Rita Skeeter would be embarrassed to write drivel this fucking loaded.

For instance, when you start your article about an internet scandal regarding members of a bunch of bloggers with:

I'm just going to stare at that statement for a few more seconds since I don't even know where to begin with it.

"Yes, quieten down peons, I know you're fighting and dying over there in Eastern Europe but there's some barely professional writers that I have an issue with."

Also, I'm purposefully ignoring all the shit about she-who-will-not-be-named, since "this isn't about her" even though everything I've ever seen written on the subject references her immediately at the beginning.

Having spent the next five paragraphs essentially defaming her and launching a scathing critique of her game, we finally get an attempt to summarise the two sides of the argument.

Which, coincidentally, actually runs entirely counter to what you guys have repeatedly said in this thread: "We want to see more integrity displayed by gaming journalists".

Followed by:

Yeah, that seems like a totally unbiased and fair representation of their arguments.

We then get an entire paragraph dedicated to a defamation of AS, who we keep getting told has nothing to do with the issue anyway. Then the writer (and I use the term loosely) goes on to label everyone who has ever been interested in a feminist critique of gaming a 'white-knight'.

The single, brief acknowledgement that there might be any wrong-doing by the other side of the argument is then immediately justified with a 'Yeah, but they're probably lying bitches anyway':

Ah, right. Suddenly the shroud is lifted, can you guess what agenda these people are pushing, using #GamerGate as a convenient cover?

FYI, the site hosting the article, Radix, is a public front for NPI and Washington Summit Publishers. Shall we get a better look at what they're about?

And then what follows are a bunch more incoherent paragraphs quoting Marx, Sun Tzu and the manifesto of a new-right 'spokesman' called Markus Willinger which sort of defy rational comment.

Finally we get the long awaited call to arms, trying to motivate GamerGate supporters to take up the bullshit cause they're side-injecting into the conversation.

Ta-da.

Guys, this is fucking cancer. Please exercise some critical thinking when you read shit.

 

In an update:

Intel have withdrawn advertising from Gamasutra over some of their articles due to the pressure campaign, hopefully more will follow, particularly for the likes of Polygon.

Shadow of Mordor had some dodgy review practices, review copes were only sent to certain you-tubers if the reception was positive. No surprise that it has 9/10 from the usual suspects. Although this has not stopped polygon from also publishing a negative article where they pretend to be offended by the perceived mysogyniy of pressing square to kiss your wife.

Ya that was pretty stupid. TB also mentioned in his review that he almost didn't get in because nobody would respond to his requests for an early copy. When he finally got a hold of somebody they would only send him one if he promised to advertise for them. He turned them down and managed to get a copy from somewhere else at the last minute, but he didn't say where.

That said, the game is a solid 8 and an 8.5 at times. Nemesis system is fun as heck.

 

In all seriousness, is TB the only respectable journo/reviewer left in gaming media. Cause I'm ok with that, and I'm not ok that I'm ok with that.

 

Eh, he's the last respectable big reviewer. I wouldn't call him a journalist. But there's plenty of good ones out there. I happen to like Matt Lees, for instance— because he's exclusively funded by Patreon, it's a reasonable bet that he's not shilling for anyone other than his customers.

Also he's part of Shut Up & Sit Down, which is awesome.

 

Something to note. I'd wager a company as huge as WB has a seperate PR branch handling early copies for reviewers.

Doesn't excuse it at all, but it should also have little to no bearing on most reviews - sans small time youtubers.

It seems to genuinely be an awesome game.

 

This is excellent news. What needs to be done now is apply the same pressure to every PR department. One campaign per media outlet. Eventually there wont be any ads anymore!

 

No adds means no sites - which may very well be what you want - or paid subscriptions for video game coverage.

Personally, I'm fine with Kotaku and Polygon disappearing.
