In other words, does such a beast exist? The best stories are those that are very brief as far as each year is concerned (one example being 'Path of Decision' by lulu42). But are there good stories that are positively monstrous (dare I say James Micheneresque?) in scope that cover all seven years? If so, what are they?

I'm in the mood for an all-encompassing epic saga but so many of them either suck or are incomplete or all of the above.

It's slash but... I have to admit that "epic seven year saga" did bring Lightning on the Wave to mind.

Along with Sacrifices, already mentioned by Cheddar, Prince of a Dark Kingdom fits that mold rather nicely.

Sitra Ahra also sorta fits, it's over 350k words long but only just finished year 2. Still a really good read though.

Well, there is 'The Prince of the Dark Kingdom' which is at the beginning of Harry's seventh year. The sage is still on and is still being updated.

    Prince of the Dark Kingdom.

'Harry Dursley and the Chronicles of the King' is a truly monstrous piece of work in terms of sheer size, amazing plot and the advanced magic involved in it. It is still at the end of Harry's third year and it's half a million words long. The author updates it twice or thrice a week with a 6-7k chapter every 2-3 days.

    Chronicles of the King

TSH series by Dethryl is in year 5 and looks like he is going to finish the series till 7th year. I'd be surprised if he finishes by 2015 or 2016.

If slash and it's explicit elements in HP fandom don't bother you, try the monstrosity that is 'The Black Heir' and it's sequel by firephoenix8. It spans all through Harry's scheduled schooling years.

These came to mind just as I read this thread. Will post if I find any more.

It's not good throughout, and don't ask Silens about it... but I would recommend The R-Series by Regulus, starting with The Philosopher's Stone Retransmuted

Oh lord, that thing. I wouldn't bother unless you like being disappointed. There's a drastic downturn year 5 and a steep drop off a cliff year 6. Didn't bother reading past that, but I'd say Silens about has the right of it.

Thanks, y'all. I'll give the stories their shots. In fact, I'm currently reading Prince of the Dark Kingdom. BTW, I'm not a fan of slash but if the story is done well...

Then I wouldn't bother with The Black Heir. Gave it a try a while back and could not get past the first few chapters. Harry gets...adopted by Sirius, renamed Orion, and sent to Durmstrang, all in the first chapter. Maybe all of that wasn't cliche when it was first published? Yeah, idk.

The same author did put up a more recent school fic called Twist of Fate, and her writing seems to have improved a bit. She has a tendency to write very long stories, so if you want to give any of her fics the time of day, I'd suggest that one.
