Trailer is awesome, re-watched The Hobbit the other night too, was much more enjoyable when you could sit back and relax without wondering how far through you were and where they were gonna end it.

The graphics that make up Smaug seem a little off, maybe because all the scenes with Drogon in GoT has changed what I think dragons should look like.

Does anyone else think Legolas looks incredibly fake? Plus I couldn't find an acting credit for Orlando Bloom on the IMDB page. Did they CG him entirely?

Edit: The Dragon does look a bit fake as well. Maybe they're rushing it a bit too much?

    It's on his page.

But I agree with you he was off. Might be the eyes they have done something to them and it doesn't appear to be contacts.

I think it's the sheer amount of blonde being blasted on screen. I am pretty sure it's actually Orlando Bloom though. I remember seeing him in the dev diaries that were being posted a while back.

He did look a little fake on the first time he showed his face. The rest of the scenes looked fine though.

I'm not sure how the general opinion on Legolas has changed. I know that when the movies first came out he was a favorite, but then that got mainstream and been hearing gay jokes since. For the elves in general, as well.
Say what you will about Orlando, but it took quite a few movies to actually show that no, he's not that great of an actor. His performance in LoTR was great.
I nearly had a nerdgasm when I saw him on the trailer, I shamelessly admit. I've always liked the elves more than any other race.
And the trailer in general has me extremely hyped.

No it's not, that's the third installment, There and Back Again. He's not listed in Desolation of Smaug or An Unexpected Journey at all and it's not on his IMDB.

I really think they phoned his appearance in and CG'ed the whole thing.

I remember reading somewhere that Legolas isn't in the next film, DoS, so much. Less than a cameo, and Orlando Bloom reprises the role well and truly in the third 'Hobbit' installment, 2014.

I don't think he's been overly CGI'd - the eyes are contacts, giving him that youthful, etheral, elven appeal. It's him, but they've fucked with his eyes since LotR.

Personally, can't wait to see Orlando in the background as much as possible.

If he's not pulling enough ridiculous faces in the background to justify the cinema ticket, I'll be getting a refund.

He's not CGI, theres a vid of him in costume fucking about I've seen, I reckon they've had to use a few tricks to hide how his face has aged over the last 10 years though, you can get away with it with Gandulf but you can't have an aging elf after all, that's probably why he looks a bit off.

I had forgotten about this...now I'm going to be looking for it all during the Hobbit trilogy.

I saw the trailer when I went to see Man of Steel, and I saw a lot of things I really like. Thranduil is Legolas's father, so him being present makes sense, they're doing the wine barrel scene, they apparently spend time in Dale. I'm liking it so far.

But there's a problem. One of the scenes they show in the trailer is Bilbo getting caught by Smaug. That's very near the end of the book.

But they're supposedly going to make three movies.

My problem is, how in the hell are they going to get a third movie out of this? Even if Bilbo getting caught is literally the very last shot in the second movie, that's still honestly not nearly enough material left to make a third.

I had assumed that the second movie would probably spend nearly all of it's time in Mirkwood, and we'd end with them arriving at Dale. At the very outside, Dale would be the end, and the second movie would close with them preparing to enter the mountain. I never imagined we'd actually enter the mountain and see Smaug awake in the second movie, and I find myself wondering how on earth they think they can make a third one with what they're going to have left.

They've said a thousand times that the third film (which they're currently filming the extended pickups and footage for) will branch beyond the Hobbit, utilizing lore and appendices materials that tie in to the story.

Trailers can also be deceiving. The footage you saw could easily be Bilbo dreaming about the inevitable encounter. Hollywood likes to do this to create an expectation that is never met, thereby ensuring they get paid without providing a product.

In the real world they call this teasing and it is punishable by rape.

That would certainly help explain why Smaug seems so incredibly small in that shot. Smaug is supposed to be enormous. "This isn't actually a hill we're standing on, it's a thigh" enormous. His head should be the size of a small house, not the size of a small draft horse. That goes double for the shot in question, because Bilbo is a Hobbit, and thus smaller than pretty much everyone. Smaug is huge by human standards. To a Hobbit, it would be even more extreme.

Trailers lie and are dirty filthy whores. I try to trust them as little as possible, all things considered.

More than once, I've seen trailers that advertise something that is literally the exact opposite of anything that is actually in what is being advertised. Sometimes they show content that doesn't even exist in the movie or game itself.

The fuck trailer have you been watching bro? Smaug's head is huge. His fangs are the size of Bilbo's torso.

I know Smaug was big, but it's not like we're talking Ancalagon the Black here.

The same one you've been. Remember, this is Hobbit scale, not Man scale. A human is more than twice as tall as Bilbo, and would come up to around the height of that protrusion near the top of the image.

So Smaug isn't actually all that big. His head was supposed to be around the size of a small house. As it is, it's only just a bit larger than the size you'd need to swallow a man whole in one bite.

No, we aren't. Smaug would be about the size of one of Ancalagon the Black's feet. But that's still a whole hell of a lot larger than what we're seeing here. Smaug would fit comfortably in a Monster Hunter endgame lineup roster. He's easily the size of some of the largest MMO raid bosses. He'd be Colossal++ if you tried to stat him in D&D, and depending on which incarnation we're talking about, he's slightly smaller than a Godzilla-sized Kaijuu by giant monster standards.
