Then there is the fact that Aang only really faced death and Korra can face danger. But losing her bending? That's a different story and way closer to Aang's dilemma back when he couldn't access the avatar state.

I quite liked that it had such a strong emotional impact on her. Also, the Avatar state seemed to be accessed by anger, and Korra was feeling pure fear. In a way, Amon is posing a much more terrifying threat than Ozai did.

I am fully expecting Korra losing her powers sometime in this season though, and that she has to go to the spirit world to reclaim them.

They're probably saving the Avatar State for a huge kick-ass scene later on. Breaking it out now would cheapen it.

For an in-universe explanation, I also lean towards the idea that she's so spiritually stunted that she can't access it with the same ease that Aang could.

I also take back anything negative I said about Steven Blum's voice acting. I'd still prefer Ron Perlman, but Blum's definitely got it.

God fucking damn it. This is making me want to watch all of the old Avatar episodes while waiting for the next one of these.

I sort of felt that Korra isn't... spiritual enough, or something, to easily delve into the Avatar state like Aang could do. Aang was raised to be sort of, uh, in touch with that whole thing. Plus airbending seems to focus on meditation and whatnot more than the other elements anyway, so that might have given him a boost in that area.

I had the impression because when Aang wanted to get advice and whatnot from the previous Avatars he'd meditate then too, so I assumed that meditation and that mentality sort of help with the spiritual aspects of being the Avatar.

Korra is pretty much the polar opposite of Aang there. Maybe the Avatar State would have popped up to help her if he had actually tried to steal her bending, but he didn't.

This series is quite different from the first one, true, but it's too early for me to say it's worse instead of just different.

Mostly because Tenzin seems to be pretty damn cool.

But I also like how it's showcasing the difference in fighting for real and fighting as a sport. Korra is shown as being a pretty kickass fighter, but in the ring she has trouble. ...though when she secretly used Airbending in that match I wonder if that counted as cheating? ;)

She wasn't actually Airbending, just using the movements of the style.

Pretty sure she was doing some subtle airbending there. Or at least an aspect of it -- I mean, I think her eyes were closed and all, so she was probably using her airbending to sense stuff and move or something, even if she wasn't herself moving air.

Going through the moves that anyone can do, bender or not, isn't likely to have gotten Tenzin excited. Or that's how I saw (and still see) it anyway.

There is plenty of drama with this show. But this is more teen drama. The only teens(main) in ATLA was Zuko and Sokka.

Did anyone else hear Korra call the cars sokkomobile in ep1 and now they are called satomobile.

Anyone think Amon might be Mako and Bolin father?

oooh, I like the mako&Bolin idea. We never did see
Amon's reaction to going up against Bolin. And the backstories seem to fit.

No. Both their parents had to be benders for them to have different bending styles: Amon is clearly a non-bender.
I think it's Bumi. Aang's non-bending son. Aang teaches him energy-bending, to pass his legacy on, but for Bumi, it's not enough. It's never enough. Two bending siblings, an Avatar for a father, and living as a second class citizen? it would be infuriating. Anger would fester into resentment, then into hatred, and soon, you have an anti-bender revolution.
    (but that's just my theory)

Haven't seen ep. 4 yet, but I'll offer my own conjecture about Amon:

Admiral Zhao, who was taken by the Ocean spirit at the end of the Siege of the North, was brought to the spirit world (where time doesn't pass quite normally). After decades of isolation in a cold cave has chilled his fiery disposition, he is approached by Ko, the face-stealer, who offers to teach him a trick, if he'll swear to use it against the Avatar and all his works...

I have trouble believing that Aang could raise a son who would turn out as bad as people are speculating that Bumi did. I could be wrong, but just guessing it's not gonna be him.

I do agree it's probably someone with a connection to someone we met in the first series though, or perhaps even the same person.

And yeah -- a lot of the drama here so far is Teen drama, which isn't my favorite, but so far it's been nicely balanced with other things I think. I am a little sad that we're going to be stuck in the City instead of traveling the globe for much of it, but I'm willing to give it a few more episodes before I knock it.

As I said before, Amon can't be Bumi, unless he went through a Michael Jackson skin pigment dyejob.

I'd prefer it if Amon were someone we didn't know at all.

Er, Jet would be as old and wrinkly as Katara... so I doubt it's him.

This bitch is 112. In the realm of Avatar, age doesn't seem to have much to do with ass-kicking ability.

Goddamn Jet. Seeing him put down again at the end would be worth the agony of shouting out "JET!" in rage when the mask comes of.
