I think Justblaise is insinuating that if the Stone could create an entire body all on its own, then it could regenerate or restore the youth of Flamel's body.

JK didnt really need to much a backstory for this at the time of PS. So i can understand why she didnt think it was too important.

Do you really want a book about how Dumbledore came to realize he was gay or books about the oh so g rated sugar coated lovefest between Harry and Ginny and how Molly spoiled her grandkids till they cant be spoiled no more. Dont forget it would include how Harry and Ron are forced to ask Hermoine how to get up in the morning because they are too stupid to know and Hermoine has all the answers?

As to the OT discussion about Rowling, she is not a detail oriented author, for better or for worse. It leads to many plot holes and inconsistencies all but her youngest readers would pick up on.

As for TLIL, the whole Longbottom thing seemed to be a tertiary plot line at best, and it was more to show the kind of considerations Harry must continue to work through.

It needed to be used eventually so I have no issues with when he chose to do so, but I am convinced HJ used half a dose on both, instead of a full dose on one. Even if he doesn't feel any emotional connection to Lily he can still empathize with the couple mentality some I would imagine.

Did a little bit of rereading. Foreshadowing and gut feeling all point to Frank coming back. It's probably already been posted, but I cbf to look through the last 10 pages to see if anybody else noticed it.
