I went in with my niece and a few of her friends and I have to say I was pretty amazed not because the story was good, which it was but because I didn't hear a single word being uttered by those girls and they never shut up.

 

Speaking of going with female relatives, my sister came with me to watch it too. At the end of the movie, as per usual for us, she asked me a bunch of questions.

The first one was 'Was that a true story?'

I of course answered that it was and asked her how she could forget the newstorm surrounding the disaster of humanity's third Mars mission.

 

Boy do I love me some misinformation, I suppose it's terrible of me but whenever I get the opportunity with some younger relatives it just slips out.

Of course that watermelon seed is going to grow in your belly and you have too poop it out, why where do you think the watermelon your eating came from.

So after a, oh I'd say, 6/10 argument with my girlfriend we ended up watching this, this weekend.

As above, we both ended up enjoying it. I was quite surprised - not having read the source material - that the film was way more upbeat, humanity fuck yeah than I was expecting. It had a lot of a nerd humour and a lot of pretty mars shots. They were pretty good about acknowledging the facts of space travel in speech even though they didn't always portray it that way cinematographically.

I think there were parts that were a bit flatter for me - the overuse of disco music (beyond even the need for the joke), but I'm not an ABBA fan, so whatever, and the way people would ignore others in speech several times so that the film could show what happened (drawing attention to the fact that you're aware you're doing it doesn't absolve you). But these are minor gripes in a solid film that I enjoyed. Would recommend.
