Either Ambrose is going to die or he's going to turn out to (a) Big Bad, and since I don't think he's Big Bad material, I don't expect him to survive to the end of Wise Man's Fear.

As for Denna, I don't actually think she is a Chandrian. But I'm pretty sure she's being used by them. The question is to what degree it's knowing/willing on her part.

Except it's already been shown that Hemme is pretty arrogant, so it's possible he'd completely underestimate Kvothe. That said, I doubt it's Hemme. Why would he bother leaving the University when he can get anything he wants from a student, and he only really commands any power or respect at the University? Someone like Hemme would thrive on the ability to command people.

Honestly, I'm more curious about what someone could do in the middle of a city on the upscale part of town, probably in broad daylight, that would piss of Kvothe enough to deserve a smiting.

    EDIT:
What if the Chandrian is a multiple-personality/vessel thing?

    I dunno...steal his lute?

We've already seen the Chandrian as multiple entities at the same time (sitting around the campfire after murdering the troupe), and they act as though they have set personalities. I think Inverarity is closer to the mark when he says it's more of a question of how willing a tool Denna is for the Chandrian and how much she knows.

On a side note, anyone want to edit the thread title to include spoiler warnings? Seems like every recent post has spoiler tags in it, and it would be nice to not have to put them up for everything we talk about.

Yeah, I'd prefer it if spoiler tags were left for spoilers for WMF. As it is I'm looking at all of them because they're for a book that's been out for several years. I'd be pretty pissed if I ran in to a WMF spoiler in one of them.

I'd be impressed, given that the book isn't out for something like another month.

That said, since this isn't really about The Name of the Wind anymore so much as theories and speculation on the future of the series, is a new thread in order?

A new thread is definitely in order. Until then though, let the speculation commence.

The Chandrian are in no way one entity. In the campfire scene, the sword guy is threatened by the shadowed face guy with his wanted status. A, you don't have power plays one you're all one person, and B you don't have separate histories when you're one person.

As a side note, since I don't want to get Wise Man's Fear spoilered for me, can someone give a brief blurb about it? I don't know much about what will happen except for where it starts.

    The Wise Man's Fear summary:

"There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man."
An escalating rivalry with a powerful member of the nobility forces Kvothe to leave the University and seek his fortune abroad. Adrift, penniless, and alone, he travels to Vintas, where he quickly becomes entangled in the politics of courtly society. While attempting to curry favor with a powerful noble, Kvothe discovers an assassination attempt, comes into conflict with a rival arcanist, and leads a group of mercenaries into the wild, in an attempt to solve the mystery of who (or what) is waylaying travelers on the King's road.
All the while, Kvothe searches for answers, attempting to uncover the truth about the mysterious Amyr, the Chandrian, and the death of his parents. Along the way, Kvothe is put on trial by the legendary Adem mercenaries, forced to reclaim the honor of the Edema Ruh, and travels into the Fae realm. There he meets Felurian, the faerie woman no man can resist, and who no man has ever survived. Under her tutelage, Kvothe learns much about true magic and the ways of women.
In The Wise Man's Fear Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time."

Yeah I would say its definitely Ambrose that gets him kicked out.

    I think you guys misunderstood:

I meant that maybe the Chandrian 'overshadow' people. Like a possession. Denna is one of them, but she herself is unaware of it, as it comes over her as though it were a second personality. She is it's vessel.

Them being all one person would pretty much contradict everything we've seen of them.

No, Styx, I understood, and what I'm saying is thats wrong.

You talk about the Chandrian as if it is one guy in control of the group. No, the Chandrian is the group, which is controlled by one guy.

And the whole 'possession' thing is a cheap method of redeeming Denna that Rothfuss, who I think is trying to explore some more adult themes than HP, will not use. Denna just being an agent makes a lot more sense in that she is doing what shes doing for herself. With that, you've got a pretty wide wedge between the Chandrian-hating Kvothe and her selfishness, resulting in real relationship problems, rather than just "Now I'm no longer possessed, I'm a great person, so lets have babies!"

Posessing Denna makes her implicit in some pretty serious shit, which also seems just a touch too far outside of Rothfuss' area. I don't think Kvothe's love interest would be able to slaughter an entire village, even if under possession. Besides that, shes not a fighter in any way, which seems to be a prerequisite for the Chandrian.

TL,DR; Denna is not possessed or a Chandrian.

Just making sure, it sounded like you thought I was saying that all of the Chandrian were the same person or occupied one body.

Huh? The Chandrian are a group of demon-like beings led by a guy named Haliax. I don't recall implying differently.

Yes, it would be. I was merely speculating on a plausible way for her to be involved with them somehow, since her working for them doesn't make any sense.

The other Chandrian were likely there, the possession may include a transformation of some kind, and I don't see why Denna herself would need to be any kind of warrior, if whichever chandrian is a magic user/namer.

That said, re-reading the passage that actually had the Chandrian in them, my theory didn't make any sense. I was trying to explain how they suddenly appear, and I'd forgotten they they just kind-of fade away.

Styx, you seem to be backtracking, whether because you've been proven wrong or because you were genuinely in error we'll never know. But on the subject of spoiler time,

Denna, she was never exactly a good person. Why wouldn't she work for an apparently all powerful group that is handing out solid coin like its candy? I just think that it sets the scene for some really powerful drama if she is a willing and able agent for the Chandrian. Making her just a mook or flunky just reduces her potential as a character, much less for the storyline.

Also, even though the spoiler discussion is fun, maybe we should try to limit the amount of text we put in here - if you didn't want spoilers that page will be mostly empty.

Okay, so, before I read them, do any of those posts actually contain spoilers for Wise Man's Fear? Or are they just discussions of The Name of the Wind, which has been out for years?

(Yes, I'm going to keep asking this for every post until it's clear that spoilers are being used for actual spoilers and not just people speculating, because I really don't want to run in to spoilers.)

None of the recent posts have had actual spoilers for Wise Man's Fear, just speculation about the Chandrian.

Fuck all of these spoiler tags. I'm with Taure on this one. The Name of the Wind does not need spoiler tags; let's reserve them for material that's from Wise Man's Fear.

Done and done, speculation is now open and transparent - the way it was never meant to be. Message received.

I don't know where the idea came from that the Chandrian is some sort of group-mind or an entity that possesses people. There's been no implication of that so far. AFAICT, the Chandrian are demonic beings who do their evil the old-fashioned way: by killing people. Whether the group we saw in TNOTW sitting around the campfire were actually Chandrian or minions of the Chandrian is not clear, but speculation that anyone might be a "host" for them seems to be without foundation.

Especially given the myth we're told about their origin.

Now, I'm fairly certain that Rothfuss will have planted a load of fanciful falsehood in the myth. But at the same time, there's probably some truth in there.

I don't know where the group-mind or single entity came from either. The possesses people thing was pure speculation, with no evidence backing it up at all, just an idea. After

I'm not saying that Denna wouldn't work for the Chandrian if she was given the chance, I'm saying that they wouldn't have any use for her.

On the contrary. As I said earlier, Denna has secondary control of Kvothe (via his heart). Therefore, if I were the once of the Chandrian (who are all interested in Kvothe - he saw them and lived, and is now investigating them), then i would be interested in recruiting someone who is close to Kvothe. Denna is already a bit of a mercenary since she lives off of what men give her after she shows interest in them, and Kvothe is interested in her (and she in him), so that gives the Chndrian a perfect "in" to keep an eye on Kvothe. Honestly, I can' see a reason why the Chandrian wouldn't have any use for her.

I apologize if this doesn't make sense; I am currently quite drunk.

...why would the Chandrian need to do all that? Why not just turn up and cut him down, like they do with everyone else, like his family?

I find it likely that the Chandrian don't know about Kvothe, simply because he's still alive. And if you think about it, I don't think he's ever mentioned his desire to research them explicitly to anyone.
