So Syfy has been dumping tons of money into developing high-budget quality scripted dramas, dropping a good portion of their low budget trash. Last season's attempts (Dark Matter, the 12 monkeys reboot, and Killjoys) were all somewhat lackluster, but the execution was a general step in the right direction.

This new batch of shows for 2015-2016 however... Holy shit. Talk about a quality bump. The glory days of SyFy channel might just be returning. I didn't feel like making multuple threads so... GIANT SYFY SHOW THREAD. GO.

The Expanse - adapted from the James S.A. Corey (aka Daniel Abraham) Expanse novels.

The first ep was gripping from start to finish. The production value blew my mind.

    Childhood's End
First ep was pretty great; a few dumb lines and plotbits here and there. Charles Dance's voiceover alone has more acting chops than most shows.

    The Magicians

Starts Wednesday. Doesn't look like it will have the same production values or quality of writing as the previous two shows, but goddamn am I excited. I love those books.

    Hunters

    Trailer looks interesting.

Incorporated - From Matt Damon and Ben Affleck

The first Expanse episode I've seen was definitely great without the usual SF TV tripe.

I binged watched the first four episodes of The Expanse. It was great, I recommend it.

Childhood's End, on the other hand, I could not get into. I can't say exactly what the problem was. I just don't think that it is my kind of Sci-fy.

Yesss, The Expanse is great and I can't get enough of it. I've started reading the books, so hopefully that will tide me over.

The Magicians was ehh. I kind of feel like they should have made like two or three episodes with everything that was in the pilot. It was really rushed and hardly anything was properly expanded on.

Anyone else stuck with Expanse? I'm loving it, haven't read the books (or knew they existed...)

Yeah, it's amazing. The only character I don't enjoy is douchepants McSleuth guy.

I'm definitely going to keep watching The Expanse. I just read Leviathan's Wake a week or two ago because of the show. And while I like the book a little bit better they've made some excellent changes in certain places.

I'm loving it! Though I've stopped watching it until the whole season is finished airing so I can binge it.

Thomas Jane's character? He's actually my favourite. What didn't you like about him?

Huh. Decided to watch 'The Expanse' after reading the reviews about it here; it's great.

The tension is palpable in every scene. Whether it is on Earth between diplomats or between Belters and Earthers/Martians, you always feel that one little thing going wrong can kickstart a interplanetary war.

Been a while since I've seen a Syfy TV show that could pass as a movie, anyways. Quality show, definitely recommend.

I've also watched the pilot of 'The Magicians'. Meh. Feels a bit generic, tbh. Like something you've seen a thousand times already.

I'm generally just not a fan of world-weary cop-on-the-beat chars that are assholes to pretty much everyone just because they're a world-weary cop-on-the-beat. It's lazy writing. Hopefully as the show goes on, we'll get some more of his backstory and his attitude will fit a little better.

Or are you referring to criminals?

The expanse was ok, binged six episodes but got a little bored. I'm just not invested in the characters somehow?

Childhoods end was pretty nice though, perhaps a bit random at times but it kept me interested enough to binge all the 4,5 hours of it.

Just starting the Magicians now, so I'm blaming Khan if I fail my seminar on Wednesday.

I really liked where they ended Expanse; not quite a cliffhangar but just wtf enough to make you want to know more.

Yeah, all in all The Expanse was one of the best new TV series that I've seen.

Good characters, good plot, nothing really stupid that just annoys the fuck out of me.

I think the best decision they've made on the Expanse is not doing one book = one season. For one thing it lets them use certain characters/actors a little bit longer. For another it doesn't excessively compress the plot.
