So... HBO finally released a full-blooded trailer for The Newsroom.

I honestly don't know how I'm supposed to feel about a typical Aaron Sorkin political rantfest that lacks Thomas Schlamme's signature 'walk and talk' style. In my opinion, the rapid-fire line delivery is largely what kept The West Wing from being interminably boring.

Thoughts about the trailer and upcoming show? Do you think it will be a West Wing / Sports Night success, or a Studio 60 flop?

I'll at least give this one a shot, out of love for the West Wing.

Just watched the first episode which touched down on HBO yesterday. It's preachy as fuck, but I kind of love it.

The trailer seriously downplayed the awesomeness off the 'greatest country in the world' scene. After that, it was hard to discern what was happening, what with Jeff Daniels' giant swaggering Sorkin-crafted balls taking up half my computer screen.

It's preachy, but it's preachy in good ways. Wasn't pleased with the whole 'youth is the worst generation', but when you take a look at the average dude my age, I can understand some of Sorkin's sentiments.

And Sam Waterston's a fucking bawse, so yeah, I'm going to keep watching.

Oh, I'm gonna give this a go. I hope it's as good as it looks.

Edit: Just finished the first episode. It's just as good as it looks. I loved the fuck out of that episode, and I really hope it continues in the same vein.

I love how they're covering the Deep Water Horizon spill, the fact that they're mirroring the news as it happened a few years ago is absolutely brilliant, as everyone already has the basic background about what's going on. Really clever way to do that.

I think this might be the most excited i've been about a new TV series in a while. Looking forward to next week now.

I agree. The show will be another HBO hit if it continues in this way.

I'm just wondering how long before shit hits the fan when he finds out what Mackenzie did.

Highly enjoyed it. Like others have said, it's a bit preachy, but I enjoyed watching it. Looking forwards to episode 2.

Man, that speech at the beginning... goddamn...

The sad part is how genuinely shocking that would be to hear for most Americans, brainwashed as we are practically from birth with the myth that we're the best at everything, anywhere, no matter what. The idea that no matter how shitty things might get here, it must be worse for the rest of the world, because America, that's why.

Okay. I just watched the episode with a friend. I can't fucking believe that this show only scored a 57 out of 100 at metacritic's, which goes to show what they see as a worthwhile message.

True, the show gets preachy a lot (especially when Mackenzie gets on her high horse over Will being an asshat), but the show's message is one that a lot of people need to hear, I think.

Iunno. I'm still coming off of an emotional high from watching the episode. 5/5 for the pilot, in any case.

The problem lies in that everything Sorkin does gets compared to 'The West Wing', which is probably the single greatest television drama ever created.

I don't know... I'm really not sure how I feel about this second episode. I find that it was a bit.. dull. Some of the plot devices were just so fucking retardedly obvious, like the "IT email changes" was obviously there for one single reason. To create a way for Mackenzie to just embarrass herself stupidly. It wasn't even cleverly done.

I do however get the feeling that this is more of a setup for the next episode to come.

So overall, unsure, but still have positive expectations.

The second episode started to hearken back to the overly-misogynistic writing that oozed out of Studio 60 like pus from a popped cyst, but it thankfully cleaned itself up by the end.

Also, how great is the soundtrack for this show?

Yeah, I definitely love the soundtrack. It really helps set the tone for what's to come.

Liked the first episode that I found extremely easily online. Having a harder time finding the second episode. Anyone have a good link?
