I bought Mean Street and read the short story in there. I'm gonna go and buy the first Nightside book tonight.

Might be an interesting film. Makes me think of that movie Dark City.

"Interview with the Vampire" sucked. Lets hope the producer shoots for another "Apollo 13".

Finished the first one about a week ago. It was honestly one of the most torturous experiences I've ever had when reading. Terrible, and I mean terrible writing. Crappy dialogue. Taylor's inner monologue is so much like his outer monologue that you have to go back and make sure there were quotation marks when he really gets going. I.E. When he describes Walker.

I doubt the Nightside will ever really live up to Taylor's droning, shambling descriptions of it. Wah, wah men with no face. Gangsters. Rich punk kids in the bar. Giant bugs from the future (and seriously, the only bugs that survive Taylor holocaust are ones that implant eggs in living hosts?). Color me unimpressed.

The 'romance' was ridiculous, boring, and tepid at best. The eventual baddie is, I-kid-you-not, an interdimensional alien haunted house that eats people, but only after luring them in with bait specifically made to catch that person (Guess who).

Even putting this story on the same map as any Dresden story is criminal. I love books, but I honestly threw this piece of garbage across the room and eventually threw it in the trash. Not even second hand stores should sell this kind of crap.

Fortunately, the only reason I'd ever pop open another one is if I was in desperate need of a fire or toilet paper.

I hadnt seen this thread before. Did Dresden come out first?

Answers that question. I glanced though the wiki and damned, it reads like he ripped off Dresden bigtime.

I read halfway through the first one and just gave up - it's not even nearly as good as Dresden. It's already been stated, but the writing is way too fucking melodramatic, and towards the end I was twitching every time he fucking said "That's how it was in the Nightside" or any other variants. If this were in For Review I'd barely give it 2/5.

I agree, this series as a whole isn't all that well-written, and the melodrama and certain quotes get so repetitive you're looking for something to break. But, there are some interesting concepts throughout the books.

They're littered far and few between, of course, but that probably just makes them stand out more when you reach them. A couple of examples here would be the Nightside take on Merlin (Merlin Satanspawn), and the description of the the chambers of the Lord of Thorns, including the language written on all its walls.

There are some things here to like, but they definitely dont stack up well against the bad.

People have been referring to Merlin as the child of demonic entities since long, long, long before this guy ever put fecal matter to paper. Hell, I think he has even been that in a couple of HP fanfics dating back before 2003.

That's true enough Sol, but from what I've seen in other mentions of Merlin as the son of a demon or devil, it was never The Devil. Not only that, but when I referred to the nightside take on the character, I was also referring to the personality Green assigned to him.

Though that does lead me to another complaint about repitition. It gets pretty annoying to always see the line "They say he has his fathers eyes" in italics every time Merlin makes an appearance.

True, in myth's the prescribed to the whole 'Merlin, son of a demon' thing, Merlin was usually the child of an incubus.

The whole series is annoying, I get the feeling he is trying to make it funny and dramatic and fails miserably.
