Good thoughts BEE79. Harry's knowledge was something that was also bugging me a lot, but then the memories he has aren't clear. They're more dream like and subconscious, but remembered and playing more into his character than direct thoughts. He isn't a 200 year old man in a boys body, he's Harry Baratheon with weird bland memories and vivid dreams. And he's only nine and learning of his place in the world. He thinks he has time to change it.

But yes, even if he only survived primary school he had to have learned about history, some technology, maths and science. And then in his later years he had to have some knowledge of the muggle world and it's progress, if only to help hide the magical one better. He died after living 200 years - ca. 2180 - so the knowledge must be staggering.

But is it applicable right now in this point in the story? No.

Maybe later during Tywin's lessons he can compare, he can draw plans. Maybe he can "invent" the Steam Engine to help the miners he saw.

Maybe after the Other comes out he can muse about Astronomy and Orbital Mechanics, if he has time between casting curses with his wand of Dragon Bone with a core of Dany's Heart String.

Your last sentence just pinged this brain wave, even if it's perhaps a little ridiculous.

The prince that is promised is possibly the same prophesied hero as Azor Azhai. Azor Azhai had lightbringer, a flaming sword that he quenched in the heart of his love? I think that's right.

Harry needs a wand, but he may not get one until it's not totally over powered and he's actually fighting The Great Other and his various minions and, essentially, it will be his magic sword. So unless he actually has to make a real lightbringer, maybe his wand core will come from Daenerys' heart. Or perhaps Aeryn's if some sequence of plottage occurs.

Obviously the ole' regular dragons would make more sense, but maybe the reincarnated Great Other still possesses a weakness to love that Harry will have to make more tangible.

Hey, at least it's not another shipping idea.

Uh, is there some protocol that says which thread to post in haha? I'm kinda just oscillating between them, but it's just kinda weird to have the same conversations going on in two threads. Not to mention people asking questions in one thread that have probably been answered ad nauseum in the other thread, ie. Voldemort's reincarnation.

From what I understand, this is supposed to be a general discussion about what's going on in the story. (e.g. that massive pairing argument). The other thread is supposed to help Cxjenious with the work (e.g. spelling/plotholes/characterization). That's how I understand it at least.

You forgot to mention the other thread is to nag Cxjenious on what direction the story should go in for selfish and personal reasons.

    That's common knowledge, isn't it?

Just look through this thread (starting from the second or third page), people are continuously talking about who is he going to marry/fuck/dance through flower filled fields with. Hence the occasional complaint in both threads.

    I've probably missed this while skimming through the discussions on both threads but;

Where the hell is Tommen? He should be alive (around 5 years old iirc), right?

It's been brought up, but Harry replaced Tommen.

Very interesting so far. I think what I'm most interested about is seeing who Harry's main enemy is. It has to be someone whose powers is on par with his. I saw earlier people mentioned having Voldemort incarnated also. The only way I would like that is if the reincarnated!Voldemort's personality was more of a pre-rituals Tom Riddle. Cunning, charming, someone who you wouldn't know was Voldemort until he revealed himself.

That would be mind blowing if you had a character introduced to be completely normal, a friend of Harry and whatnot, and then it turns out to be Voldemort.

He's the Great Other -- some sort of ice zombie demon king, apparently. I doubt he'll be very charming, or even very human. But who knows, I don't think we've actually seen this Great Other in the books. Cxjenious pretty much has free reign on how to handle him.

Actually I think it'd be a lot better if his "great enemy" (if he even has or needs one) was, y'know, someone politically savvy and intelligent rather than someone with the same gamebreaker powers he has.

I can read Shezza or Joe if I want magical duels and spellfire.

Hardcore political fiction? That's not only infinitely more interesting, but also a hell of a lot harder to write.

Don't turn this fic into the former.

Exactly! Isn't that what Game of Thrones is all about? Yes, the dragons, magic, and violence is all good, but the mind games and politics between the characters is what makes it great. ASoIF touches on the human mind and the natural need for power and a sense of importance.

Then why do you want his "main enemy" (and really, why does he even need one anyway? The Great Other is enough, and even in ASOIAF I didn't like the white walker plotline much) to be magical?

I'm not sure why you people seem to think it can't be both ways. There's no reason that there can't be a mixture of political intrigue and magic stuff. After all, this IS a crossover between Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, not a pure GoT fic.

Plus, I'm pretty positive that it's a done deal by now anyway and that no discussion on the matter can really change something that huge. From everything we've seen so far, Harry's only reason for being reincarnated is to counter Voldemort's reincarnation.

That is more of a problem with the fantasy genre than ASOIAF. Middle earth is very old as well, but the technology of the world stayed mostly the same, and even degraded when you look at what the Numeroans managed to accomplish.

The technological revolution that happened between the 1700's and the 1900's was a result of a change in government. Monarchy gave up the ghost, common people started doing shit other than poking hay around. There weren't any diseases that decimated the human population, for the most part. Plus, the expansion of territory via the Americas allowed economies to change drastically. A war in Europe would no longer stagnate technological growth, there would be other countries for research to be carried out. There are lots of reasons, big and small, for the Industrial revolution and the great 'acceleration' toward "Modern Day". Technology is also lost, forgotten, and misunderstood.

Do compare this: "Modern" humans have only existed <100,000 years. The earliest city was what, at best 10,000 years ago? What the fuck were we doing for some 20 thousand to 80 thousand years? Dicking around in the mud? Why didn't it only take a few thousand years since our evolution to get to the "modern" day?

Although 8000 years in medieval technology might be hard to swallow - it's very possible if constant warfare, disease and famine prevent humans from researching technology. There are also countless other possibilties, like technological research being forbidden by a religion, or since magic is involved, someone could have instigated or derail any progressive research intentionally? Who's to say there isn't a deity manipulating things to prevent it?

I've only tried to (and barely managed) read the first couple chapters of ASOIAF, so, I don't know anything about the world to say exactly, but it's not an unreasonable possibility, given the way our own world played out.

Could it be the fact there just weren't enough people around and chance had not cooperated enough to create a stable society with farming, writing and sufficient numbers of people.

Well, hunter-gatherer groups got as big as or bigger than 100-150 individuals, which is enough to start a settlement somewhere. Obviously, resources prevented them from anything but roaming.

    Riiiiiiiiight....

So I don't give a damn about the development of human society...

I do care about giving feedback

Cxjenious... Ever thought about putting the inner monologue in italics instead of single quotes? Maybe it's a font thing, but it gets confusing when I read sometimes.
