I think that we will have to be careful about what we do regarding authors who post questionable stuff on PC. Authors who are thrown out might potentially cause a shit-storm that would make other newbies in fanfiction writing shy away from posting here.

The best solution, IMHO, would be some sort of a rating system. Registered users could then filter everything below a certain rating out.

EDIT: An ignore-list feature wouldn't be too bad, either. Would be very useful if someone like Tridentwatch joined.

Or Raven officially warned him, I got what I wanted, (No more update flooding) and the matter is officially closed. Thank you, Raven.

I write stories to completion before posting. By the logic several have expressed, I shouldn't post to PC until I have finished serializing on ff.net and only then if I post the whole thing in one go. Otherwise, I, too, risk being banned.

While I think it's a bit of a dick move (and possibly a troll) on the part of witowsmp, I don't think his actions are ban-worthy unless someone can point out what rules he's actually breaking.

I asked the author to try and limit his update floods.

    I received this:
I thought I was quite polite. He's not doing me any favors posting on my site. All it does it waste my time and money if he wants to update flood every single week.

But no, he will not be banned. It's his choice if he wants to remove his stories.

    Good fucking riddance.

Many people had a problem with it, he was asked politely to stop, if he takes offense... why exactly do we care?

I will agree with Tehan that mob justice is stupid however. There are always little things that people never take into consideration.

Just to be clear, his email to Raven was heavily influenced (probably) by MrBond's retarded email.

    I /said/ fucking sorry.

    <_<

MrBond. In ur fan fiction. Chasing out deh fail.

At the time, the basis of my argument for /not/ banning him was 'just fucking pm him, Glernaj.' I didn't think of Raven, so I c&p'ed the logs (in their entirety. /all/ of what Glernaj & the others said about him.), emailed them too him, and included a little advice; apologize, fix it, don't do it again, and you'll be shiny.

He was a whiny cunt. Still, at least partly, my fault, but he'd have probably done the same no matter what.

Didn't notice this thread before, but I am kinda surprised the mods haven't stomped down more heavily on the "Should he be v&?" poll. Seeing how mob mentality is being fought against these days.

All that aside, as people have said before, nothing of value was lost. And while I often get sad looking at how all my fav fics aren't getting updated at PC, some whiny faggot updating his already-finished stories and flooding the front page spectacularly fails to cheer me up. D:

I don't particularly like the guy's attitude in his message to Raven, but considering he saw the logs of our conversation in IRC I am not one bit surprised.

The kid essentially stayed within the system and used it. We had no rule for "update flooding" or for "flooding update queue."

That means the next time something like this goes down we're just going to get on someone's case with an ad hoc argument to get rid of them.

    That is just retarded.

Seems unfair to me that someone needs to be banned because of the limits of a particular feature on PC (the latest update box).

Say we have a writer much more popular than this guy and who is as equally prolific. What the fuck are we going to say when they flood the queue?

I know people like Xiph0 have no issue calling down anyone regardless of popularity, but he's one of like 5 other members on DLP.

Eh. It was annoying to look at the list of recently updated stories and see witowsmp like ten times and nothing else. Even more so since I had no interest in them -- his (funny, I always thought he was female) old H/G I had already read in my H/G phase, and nowadays he writes H/Hr, which is even worse.

Maybe I would've felt differently if it was something I was actually interested in, I dunno. But this way, I had some useless stories blocking my recent-window ... Ah well, it seems to have sorted itself out, in this case.

Still, might be a good idea to think of what to do with issues like that in general. Seems logical that it could happen again, when another author decides to put up all his stories on PC ... but then again, there is always the option of putting them up at once. Neisseria did that, for example.

And completely unrelated -- I was alternating between laughing and wanting to cry.

It would have sorted itself out in time anyway. In a few weeks, he would have run out of chapters and things would have gone back to normal.

Perhaps someone (not Raven, who has enough on his plate) should invest the time to pen a draft FAQ so that these rules can be clarified for all. I, for one, don't have any idea which (if any) of my stories are "PC-worthy," since it's never been defined. (I've erred on the side of caution--none of my last four have been posted on PC--because I recognize that a story with an even mildly sympathetic Ginny, say, is counter to DLP groupthink).

Another alternative, one that would require work, would be for the site to go the way of SIYE and have editors approve all stories. The traffic on PC is relatively sparse, so this probably wouldn't take much more time than many spent complaining the last round. Then, folks could just complain to the board rather than add additional work for the site administrator.

Incidentally, you've all just telegraphed how to effectively troll DLP to anyone who has a large pile of stories (say a kb0, a St. Margaret, or a Spenser Hemmingway) and a taste in fanfiction that runs counter to this site's.

Could the code for the Latest Updates box be rewritten so that any given author can only appear on it two or three times simultaneously?

Probably a more technically complicated solution, but it would only have to be done once, rather than adding rules to the FAQ, policing to make sure the rule is followed, corresponding with authors who violate the rule, dealing with authors who get pissy about it and decide to slash and burn their works before they leave, et cetera.

One would hope that, had witowsmp not been sent the logs, he would have reacted to Lord Ravenclaw's email a bit more calmly, but who knows.

All I can say is that if, as witowsmp says, the site wasn't generating reviewers, then it was pretty pointless posting single chapters of stories he had already completed. As lazy as people can be about reviewing (guilty), he should consider the fact that many people have already read (and reviewed) his completed stories at the sites where they were originally posted and, as such, feel neither the need to read, nor review it at PC.

Also, if anyone is expecting PC to generate the numbers of ANY stat they get at a site the size of FFN, at least at this point in time, they should promptly gain some perspective.

I'd also recommend that people give the mods a bit more time to act before hauling out the torches and pitchforks. I know a lot of members have a 'fuck what others think' attitude, but I hate to think that either DLP or PC is developing a bad reputation.

And, yes, I do realize that, at least in the case of DLP, it's pretty much already too late to worry about getting a bad reputation.

So many fucking bitches thinking being elitist bitches is the solution. I say we ban anyone who ever suggests banning anyone. Wait a tick...

Hows aboots you take a look at the problem and offer a solution, instead of asking for banning an author from posting on a fanfiction site? Egads.

If your problem was witowsmp flooding the "recent updates" area, why not say that and suggest a way to alter the recent updates? Maybe a limit of one update per story showing up in that list? Or a limit of two stories per author in that list?

Why not just have a update list for authors? So it lists the author only once and links to the Profile instead of the story. It would save space and advertise other stories by the author without flooding.

And I can't imagine that being very difficult for Raven, so... good idea, Knox (I dun believe I'm saying this).
