I agree about him being an emo little bitch; and the lameness of his HP fic. His Pokemon fic, however, was very good in my own opinion. I admit now that The Sun Soul is better; but emo-bitch's Pokefic still rates top two or three for me.

While I agree the destruction of Pallet was convenient, nonsensical, and misplaced, Ash's reaction to it is far better than the normal reaction. I've read "protagonist whines over loss of home and family" more than enough to be easily turned off by it. I'm holding out that the author will come back to Ash's non-reaciton in the future and explore his apparent indifference. Such a scenario would make the best of an unneeded deus ex.

 

Well, that was the first Pokemon fic I have ever read, and holy shit, it was a good experience. Sure it was a bit dramatic in places, but I honestly like that. Go figure.

The characterization is excellent, especially with the questionable loyalties of Misty at the moment. Ash is no where near as annoying as I remember him from the show back in the day. Pikachu is excellent, the super!trainer device is well used, and not overpowered at all. Keeps the curiosity aroused, but he isn't a god.

I also enjoyed some of the imagery, such as Ash scratching the back of his head. Gave me quite a bit of nostalgic appreciation in regards to the old show.

 

It was Bon Jovi, at least early on in his story, and he was playing to a comatose Lily in the Long Term Care ward.

I've yet to read this story, but probably will based on everyone's comments. That said, I don't know much of the Pokemon 'verse, save for what I've picked up from my son and his gazillion cards and having caught the anime a few times. Will that be enough, or am I going to have to have a Wiki open to make sense of things?

Depends how you want to go about it really, and the same way I go round the Star Wars verse.

If you're willing to just assume that any nonsensical word is a big scary thing that can killz you with powerz, then there's enough of a story here and depth of plot that you can follow it fairly well without knowing the backstory. But if you want to follow the details, and care about what each individual pokemon looks like, then you'll want wiki open.

You'll obviously miss the finer references and the lampshades, but it should still be a fairly enjoyable story.

 

I've seen maybe 4 episodes of pokemon in my life and never played any of the games, but I still loved this story. Waiting for more.

 

I haven't dealt with anything pokemon in over 5 or 6 years. I can still work everything out just fine.

I get... a few flashbacks, memories of what what is. However, none of it would be necessary.

What vlad said is also relevant. If you want to know what all the pokemon look like, star wiking. It's almost worth it too be honest. Knowing what something looks like is always a good start. Especially when everything is documented.

 

Pokemon isn't a hard concept to understand, it's series for young children. Everything about it is incredibly simple.

I would use Bulbapedia, it's the Pokemon-specific wiki, so you'll get much more info over the basic Wikipedia.

As for the update, I liked it a lot. I have to say, I went out and tried heaps of other Pokemon fics after reading this one, and well, they just aren't really worth it.

The author manages to write the pokemon battle scenes incredibly well. It can't be easy, considering how cheesy and shitty the game version of the fights are like. I also love the brutality, the actual 'fight to survive' atmosphere that is going on. The world is one where compassion gets you killed. You want to live in the wild, you have to take people down, before they take you down.

Still highly enjoying it, can't wait for more updates.

Very true. Liked the chapter, we finally get at least some explanation for Ash's badassery.

 

It doesn't seem exactly right the author doesn't mention mass effect in the beginning the chapter - Bill is obviously inspired by Mordin.

 

I think the only other pokemon fic I've read up till now besides Sun Soul that didn't make me want to puke all over the keyboard is Clouded Sky.

It's basically about some OC who gets a Murkrow as his first pokemon and now the authorities in his region is hunting for his head. It's not great but eh, still a bit better than the rest methinks.

 

I liked Clouded Sky a lot actually. Societal conspiracy type fics are pretty good.
