    Yes they do.

Doesn't change the fact that this is a rather dumb thread.

    EDIT: And it's Parseltongue...

I think SacroasanctSofa was being sarcastic.

Anyway on the OP. I don't see what is disturbing. Is it that you think, given your bizarre scenario, that we are eating animals with the same intelligence level? You don't really make a point beyond that.

Though I do like you're thrid picture, bit overcooked but mouthwatering nontheless

I agree with whoever said that it's just the articulation of a snake's "thoughts," the content of which is probably heavily influenced/augmented by the nuances of the wizard or witch's mind.

But JKR slipped in some nice symbolism for one of Harry's first instances of magic, by having him speak to and liberate another captive being like himself longing to return to a homeland it only vaguely remembers.

OT: Even if cows in HP could think and speak, the law of food chains is still in effect. Wizards (theoretically) have the power to fucking create cows, I highly doubt they'd mind eating semi-intelligent ones much more than eating mindless ones.

It certainly didn't stop Morfin from nailing his snakes to the door.

Reading this thread made me order a delivery for a couple of charcoal broiled burgers instead of pizza.
Has anyone eaten a snake before?

Cooked python meat tastes okay.(and it doesn't taste like chicken!) We ate one during our jungle survival course.

Ah this thread was good until JBlaise's post, now it's just turned into a giant DLP circle-jerk.

    For shame.

I'd like to be the first in this thread to not be retarded, besides Xiph0. Seriously, noobs, you're ease... This is General Discussion about the world of Harry Potter. In this forum, we talk about what is in THAT world, not the real world.

In that world, this potentially does have implications, and it's an interesting idea. In a world where simple owls can track humans across the globe and act as intelligently as Hedwig did with Harry, it's not that ridiculous to consider that many other animals might be sentient.

Your idea that magic somehow translates how animals in the real world think to human speech is just as abstract. Most of you would laugh at that in the same idiotic way if someone made a thread about it.

Now, the PETA ideas did come out of nowhere, and they weren't the kind of implications that we could have come up with if someone had actually taken this thread in an intelligent direction.

Nevertheless, it is creepy to consider that in that world everything that we do to animals in this world might be happening to something with sentience. It already pisses me off when they can't think like we do. If they could, I'd make my own SPEW, for shizzle.

Yeah, but have you seen anyone eating a snake in Harry Potter?

Yeah, but the OP didnt explain what was disturbing about the scenario. She just said that if a snake is sentient and intelligent, then so are all other animals. Its a pointless discussion. If she said that snakes, and therefore all animals share the same sentience and intelligence as humans, then we shouldn't eat them then thats fine, but she didn't. And if she did, then I'd challenge her to convince a Lion to stop eating Zebras and a Turtle to stop eating Jellyfish before she suggests that Humans stop eating meat.

Besides, she still suggested that what is in HP should be applicable to real life, so any response akin to saying that 'snakes can't actually talk' should be considered a valid rebuttal to the OP

That was pretty much the point of her post. To mock the OP. Great job at looking like a complete tool though.

I find it telling that the only post Lord Raine seems to have made in this thread is the one with which she dropped a massive price of troll bait into the dead waters of General. And no one seems to have noticed her obvious attempts at trollig, they're actually discussing this vegan horseshit.

When you first joined Raine I felt that Taure and Zephyrus were being unfair to you, everyone deserves a clean slate at DLP right? Well remind me to apologise, youre a halfway talented author, but your constant bitching on WbA, your general stupidity the presumptousness of taking a male title, your trolling all give me the ability to paraphrase Taure without the slightest hint of guilt and say :

Maybe she didn't respond because no one was anything but negative. Defending her thread might have made this thread go on forever, and nothing would have come of it.

Or maybe she (he? it is the internet) is a troll. I don't know either way. I can say, though, that bandwagoning is fucking annoying, and it makes it so people don't think straight.

BTW, fucktards, General wouldn't be 'dead waters' if a few people actually made a bloody attempt to discuss (as in general *discussion*) the topics presented. Try making your own threads with interesting new ideas rather than shooting your loads off in someone else's.

If we're able to separate fiction from reality (I know, tall task), this sort of thinking could have some implications. Animals, even if non-magical, seem to have a sentience to them beyond what we are aware of in reality. I don't want to delve into the 'are animals actually capable of thought/logic/reasoning' debate, and don't believe this is the direction this thread needs to go.

Actually. I'm tempted to write a one-shot where someone points out the abnormal level of intelligence in ordinary animals in the Wizarding world out to Hermione. The subsequent potential for comedy could be quite amusing.

Well. It seems hilarious in my head, anyways. That's likely not saying much, though.
