    hi everyone - i watched the OotP movie yesterday and I realised something - why can harry only see the thestrals in the fifth book when he saw the death of his mother and death of Quirrel :confused:

    Anyway - your wiews on this? i dont know if JKR 'validated' this quirk?

    JKR explains it somehow.

    Something about coming to terms with death and actually seeing it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think she said Harry didn't see Quirrel die because he passed out.

    That question is as old as the fifth book. I would be surprised if it wasn't to be found somewhere in one or the other thread, so use the search.

    She answered it to that effect that he was too young when Lily died to remember how it was like to see her die, and Quirrel doesn't count, since he never saw him dying either, being unconscious; and as for why he sees them at the beginning of OotP and not at the end of GoF, that was because she wanted to use this "darker" element in OotP for the first time, since it fitted the dark theme of the book.

    ... no, I'm not making that up. >.< Rowling did, in an interview, somewhere.

    I strongly advise you, dragon_89, to shape up your grammar, i.e. capitalisation.

    I also advise to always use the search function to see if any other thread exists.
    Especially when referencing such threads without providing links.

    (Just a general point, don't get your britches in a twist)
