Not sure if any of you ever played the old Tribes games, or not - Starsiege: Tribes, Tribes II, Tribes Vengeance - but the latest addition to the series after a seven year hiatus, Tribes Ascend, is about to go into beta testing.

The intellectual property was acquired by a new studio who appear to be reverting the game back to it's Starsiege: Tribes roots with fast-paced large scale maps, jetpacks, vehicles, etc. Artwork, screenshots and in-game footage look great so far.

The best news is that they are releasing the game as free-to-play, modeling their FTP system off of the one utilized by League of Legends whereby, eventually, just by playing the game enough you can unlock the content.

Check it out... eager to get back into some Diamond Sword/Blood Eagle conflict, myself.

I've been looking forward to this for a long time. It'll be interesting to see if this game manages to get the same kind of competitive scene Tribes 2 had.

I remember wasting away so many hours in front of my TV playing this game, it was so worth it.

I know TotalBiscuit has some video footage of a hands on somewhere, I'll track it down in the morning. All I remember is that it looked great when I saw it then and this beta footage only makes me want more.

 

I'm a Tribes fan too, though I got into it when Tribes: Vengeance came out. I'll definitely be playing this.

 

I was super excited to hear about this game, until I realized it was HiRez that is at the helm.

Yeah, not excited anymore. Global Agenda was pretty bad.

 

My god, that brings back memories. Just the sounds alone take me back to that game. I used to love it, I don't know what made me stop.

 

Tribes 2 was amazing. I learned how to upgrade my computer for that game, and was saddened to learn Gateway computers are nearly impossible to upgrade, so I had to learn how to build a computer without an idiot proof recovery disk, lol.

Vengeance was a steaming pile of shit however. I still want to beat whoever it was hear that talked me into spending 30$ on that game. I have high hopes for this one, but with Planetside 2 coming out soon, I'd rather do that

 

Agreed. Planetside is the only MMO I've ever really gotten into. Three years of my teenage life were spent abusing the fuck out of that game. I'm definitely looking forward to Planetside 2.

They took the servers down a while ago, but the people at http://www.tribesnext.com/ made it playable again.

Certainly brought back some memories for me, even though I was never very good at it. I did notice my aim improved quite a bit in other FPS games after playing T2 again for a little while.

Never played a Tribes game until a week ago when I got my beta key. And now I can't stop playing.

Tribes is FTP - with paid content if you want it. I have (I think) two beta keys if anyone wants.

Game is so fucking fun. I suck at it, but still manage to get some kills. Even TF2 isn't like that.

 

I'd really like one if you don't need it for someone else. Haven't been lucky enough to get my own invite.

So, I don't even remember signing up for the beta for this.. but somehow I got a key.

Been a long time since I've played any FPS seriously, but this looks very UT:GoTY-ish to me, from what I've seen.


Would that be a correct assessment?

Cause if so, I'mma play the shit out of it.

 

I got my beta key (not hard, like it on facebook for you lazy asses). Never played the first or the second, or even heard of it until this thread, but I need a new FPS. TF2 is fun, but pretty stale.
