Yeah, I thought I was the only one who pick up on that. But maybe they'll have a flashback chapter like Samuel Black suggested.

Oh bite me, I just didn't want her in the damn book claiming about how she could "protect her city". And yes Kincaid is awesome. And I would love it if Ivy could make an appearance somewhere too.

@SamBlack: Yea that is Grave Peril that you are thinking of.

Back OT, it did feel like a rather abrupt start to a book to me as well. But IMO it seems like this might be a set up for a fairly fast paced novel, more in line with Summer Knight and Small Favor than say, White Night or Proven Guilty.

Still it's always great to see Butcher put something out.

/me goes to check the date and glare at the clock....

In Butcher We Trust. I'm more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to opening chapters. As someone said, maybe it will be a hectic book.

Wouldn't it be amusing if Lash was never actually killed by the brain damage and has only been hiding for so long so that when she comes back Harry will be much more willing to trust her?

Fuubar, I just noticed your sig. Anyone else get the feeling that Harry will have to contact the Erlking again?

I get the feeling that in the last few books he is going to be calling on all these things he has learned(kemmlers book), powers he has learned(necromancy, hellfire if lash is back), and people he has met and earned the respect of(erlking, lara raith, Ivy, Kincaid.)

I gotta agree with you, Ragon; I think one of the most important things about the events of the books is that in every book Dresden is gaining a little something from it all, be it more power, more respect, more prestige, more knowledge, etc. etc.

So hell yes, we'll be seeing the Erlking again. He was too badass for him not to crop up sometime soon--plus, he's one of the people who can call the Wild Hunt. What with the world getting darker and whatnot, I gotta say that it wouldn't be unsurprising to see him soonish, and certainly in the last three books.

Honestly, if you think about it.. Harry has a lot of power built up, a lot of pull. The Archive and the Hellhound, his slowly growing Guard that I expect to become fairly important down the line as scouts or the like, his connections with Marcone and Monoc Securities (and thus most likely Odin) through Gard, a Valkyrie herself. He's slowly build more and more respect as well in the White Council, and I expect that soon (maybe even after Turn Coat) that his role in it will be even larger than it already is as a Regional Commander. Not only that, but the Paranet probably makes Harry one of the most respected by the "little people", people who are less magically talented than Council members but.. well, they're far more numerous than Council members as well, and the numbers game has always had a play in war.

You gotta admit, Harry's pulled off some amazing shit that makes him more worthy of respect than pretty much any Wizard on the Council except for some of those on the Senior Council, and I guarantee that he's probably much more liked and respected by those of younger ages. I don't think it'd be a stretch to say that within the next three books (if there's still a White Council at all by then, anyway) that either Harry is the Captain of the Wardens or even a Senior Council member, though the latter might be a bit out of his ball park right now. But, it would rather go along with the theme of Harry being forced to take up more and more responsibilities as the books go along.

.. boy, this post got a bit long. Anyway, it's mostly just telling everyone what they already know, but man, I'm looking forward to the next book, and the one after it, and.. well, all of them.

Hmmm, maybe, but that comes off as a little bit more "Alera'ish" to me. Now that is not really a bad thing but it just doesn't seem like something that Dresden would go for unless the circumstances were apocalyptic or someth.... oh wait ;)

I don't know whether he will come back as an ally or an enemy (or a little of both,) but I'm sure that we will be seeing some more of those big timers as the series progresses.

He definitely isnt an ally but I dont think he is an enemy.

Your right the idea does seem more like something from Alera, but at the same time it seems completely different to me. Harry has a great deal of power on his own, and is fully capable of fighting on his own. No great armys just a few individuals with unique talents. Seems far more like Nightside series to me.

Weird beginning but I thought the same thing first reading Grave Peril, so I'll suspend any negative feelings. I like the idea of Lash coming back. I've been looking forward to that since her taking one for the time. I wonder how she'll react to Uriel's interest in Harry, and his newly acquired gift of Soulfire. And for God's sake, I wish Harry does something with the swords in this book since he's just collecting the things like trophies now.

She probably is the source of Harry's soulfire. We know Uriel did two things(to counter Satan's two thing) for Harry, yet the only thing that we actually saw happen was the coin catching incident and Soulfire. One possible explanation for poth of those his his two interventions were bring back Lash and then redeeming Lash thus giving her soulfire.

It's been some time since I last read the books, but I don't recall that being in any of them.

And the first chapter was cool. I hope that Butcher manages to bring Lash back. She's too awesome to die.

It was shown in one of the short stories, and referenced in Small Favor (The Flight of the Valkyries playing as she showed up in the helicopter).

I actually like the sound of that. Since Murphy wielded it in Small Favor and turned down the job offer then I can totally see Morgan getting it. His faith in the Laws of Magic is absolute. And the obvious choice for Amoracchius will be Thomas since he's crazy in love with Justine even though they can't be together.

You know, I've got to say that that's a very good thought, but I'm not sure I agree unless Morgan decides to quit being a Warden field command; after all, that's a bit of a full time job.

Though, what with him being chased down by his own people and whatnot, I could see him perhaps losing faith in the White Council and its laws and instead turning to another absolute--the White God, and having faith in it. But, I'm not quite sure how in character that would be.. a lot would have to happen for Morgan to take up the sword. Plus, I really can't imagine Morgan wielding a katana of all things. It just doesn't seem to suit him all that much. Just an aesthetic thing, but.. yeah.

I do, however, agree on the Thomas eventually taking up Amoracchius, considering his love for Justine and his status as a Venator. Gotta say, it seems like a perfect match to me.

Anyone else rereading the books in preparation for Turn Coat? I just got done reread Small Favor again, and I'm going to reread White Night, Proven Guilty, and Dead Beat likely within the next week or so. Though honestly, Dresden Files is one of the few series I really don't need to reread books to remember everything.. perhaps because I've reread them all two or three times, or because the relatively small wait between books.

You know.. it's sad that Butcher can write a book in the time that some fanfiction authors take to write a chapter, though I guess it's a bit more motivated.

Well I'm almost positive that it has been said that all the swords except for Amoracchius have been reforged over the centuries, so we could have it happen and not have that rather, interesting image stuck in our heads.

    LOL. That is all.
