Like Odran already said, you would still have to change their characters. It doesn't matter what kind of relationship it would be, as long as it's a relationship past the like brother/like sister stage Harry or Hermione would never start something else with other people.

You would not have to change their character -- you would only have to write the story from an entirely different perspective.

The books that J.K. Rowling wrote do not deal with the psychological trauma that Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, or Ronald Weasley have been put through.

Logically, one would come to the conclusion that seven years of near death experiences would certainly have adverse effects on a person's mind.

We -- as in, the readers, do not truly know the inner workings of any character in the Harry Potter series. And the few glimpses we are shown, reveal that Harry and Hermione do not have a problem resorting to sadistic and violent actions.

Nevertheless, if a writer were to focus on the psychological, it would not be out of the realm of possibility for Harry and Hermione to have an affair during the horcrux hunt. In fact, there would probably be a higher chance of it happening than not.

Something being common doesn't mean it's a good thing or acceptable behavior.

Murder is common, for example.

And yes, having an affair tends to mean you're a bad person.

You literally cannot be a good spouse if you're cheating on your partner.

Not only are you betraying the vows of fidelity you both took, you are disrespecting that other person, you are deceiving them, and you are exposing them to all sorts of harm, ranging from purely psychological and emotional to physical via STDs.

If there's something fucked up in your marriage, work on the issue and see if it can be fixed or divorce.

As for you knowing many people involved in affairs, well, that speaks sufficiently for the company you keep.

Unconventional romance ideas?

Harry gets really close with [insert girl here], they're best friends, have shared interests and peeves, genuinely enjoy spending time together and both get annoyed when their other friends imply they spend too much time together.

They both still want to have 'fun', like most singles (travel, dance, drink, shag), but they just want to do it with the other by their side.

They also both feel comfortable about talking to each other about anything, good or bad, so stupid misunderstandings don't happen.

There, that's pretty unconventional.

 

Gryffindors have a party. Harry gets massively drunk and hooks up with someone. He has to spend next couple of days tiptoeing around his female friends until he figures out who it was.

 

Only girls knows that he doesn't know and they keep playing with his head by acting like they were the one.

At the end of the story Harry gets his hands on Dumbledore's Pensieve and figures out that it was none of those girls that played him. It was actually

Harry and Millicent Bullstrode after he is friendzoned by one of the "hot" slytherin girls (even though with the exception of Pansy we don't actually know what any of them look like)

 

Harry and Gabrielle are friends with benefits. Gabrielle knows that Harry has a pathetic crush on Fleur and only uses her as a substitute but continues it anyway.

 

Harry suspects he is being loved-potioned by Ginny, so he leaves her, only to fall in love with a Slytherin girl. It turns out he was wrong, and is promptly turned over to Voldemort.

 

Bit difficult when the oldest she could be is 11, assuming Harry stuck around for Seventh Year.

 

I know couples who 'exchange' spouse regularly. They don't engage in sexual intercourse with anyone else though, it's really between the four of them. I think that kind of setup could work with Hermione-Ron-Harry if developped early enough. They have shared traumatic experience. Now of course the whole Harry going out with Ginny might be a problem with this kind of dynamic. Either she doesn't know or she does and she's okay with it because she understands, maybe she has her own lover on the side.

 

I think it would be possible to twist and handwave a few characters being into swinging or whatever but definitely NOT Ron. The fact that he gets so insanely jealous is probably his biggest character flaw.

 

Eh -- I could see Ron becoming a cuckold.

 

I think it could kind of work if you set the base early enough and that it developed during the Horcrux hunt considering they are the only one they have. Obviously it would need a lot of tweaking.
