What is this HPB you speak of? Is it another badly written fanfic?

Anyway I too agree with the magical exhaustion idea. I mean otherwise wizards will have infinite power which is rather ridiculous. And the AK should be one of the hardest and most exhausting spells to cast.

That said if one happens to be a powerful wizard (aka Voldie or Dumbles) then they can cast more then anyone else. I also believe that if one becomes familiar with a spell (with constant use) then they could cast it wordlessly and without wand movement. Its like learning to drive a bike. Its hard at first but once you get used to it, you can do it blindfolded.

On the note of the Patronus, I think most fanfic authors have a point on the power of that spell. Harry can cast a corporal Patronus at 13. The impression I got was that most adult wizards had trouble with that charm. Not only can that he do it when faced with multiple Dementors. Not to mention the fact it’s powerful enough to drive off a hundred of the creeps. So I think it is a testament to his power that he can do a successful Patronus at 13 when his magical ability is only developing.

Okay, i can live with that.

BUT...that leaves another plot hole. Or a convenience.

Why the fuck should Hermione/Neville/Ron be able to cast one too? As you said, something that i agree with, most adult wizards/witches can't cast it properly.

How fucking convenient that the tiny group of people he 'trains' can cast it.

And in super!Harry H/G stories...i might be able to endure a lot, but i DROP a fic the minute Ginny's Patronus turns out to be 12 year old Harry holding the Sword of Gryffindor. Whore.

I'll stand by my former opinion, though...AK and Cruciatus MUST be cast with words. I dunno, they are the most awesome curses, power-wise, in canon. It just seems fitting.

I can't stand when Dark!Harry finds a book full of curses SO much more painful than the unforgivables. That's unrealistic...then these curses would be on the list of Unforgivables as well. If you want to think of a more painful curse than Crucio, then just think: "Well, as bad as this pain might be, Crucio is at least a little bit MORE painful."

This is a little off topic, but how would Harry use the killing curse in cannon to kill Sirius when he didn't know about it till 4th year? Is that just another plot hole by JKR?

There were some spells that are required non-verbaly i thought in HBP like the leviocorpus couldn't be shouted. So all spells can be non-verbal, but not all spells can be cast verbally.

I think you guys have come up with all the examples that prove all spells can be used non-verbal, so i'll just smile and nod my head.

Say what???? When does he use the AK in canon???

Yarrgh! I agree about all the members of DA casting a Patronus. I thought it was rather strange. The older students maybe. But even then I expect it to be only mist intead of solid form. I mean members of the Wizzy-got were impressed that Harry could cast it. Then later on in the year the majority of the DA can do it??? I didn't make sense to me why all the higer up would be impressed if it could be taught in school. That would mean anyone can do it and yet they all gasp in shock when they learn Harry could. That one of JKR's flip-flops it seems.

In my mind IF the students can cast a Patronus then it would only be something like a mist until later in life. Otherwise it wouldn't be so special to learn it at 13.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA I can see her in her room casting the charm over and over just to gaze in wonder at the BWL.... ROFL

I think he's referring to 3rd year, when Harry said he would kill Sirius for betraying his parents. THis was before the truth came out.

I dunno what he would have done...probably cutting curses or maybe just fire sparks at him until his raggedy-ass clothes caught on fire? :p

Or maybe the good old wingardium leviosa :ppp
more seriously, a combination of petrificalus totalus and a fire charm like hermione's would be particularly devastating. Of course, that is supposing sirius'inner magic doesn't free him. a secene i hated in canon was the one where malfoy paralise harry, and harry doesn't know ho to get out of a bloody first year spell.

Seriously, about the question, we *know* that there is no such thing as power battery in hp. We saw pettigrew cast AK, and crouch cast imperio at least fourty times in a row, without tiring. There is no such thing. that's all. when one can cast a spell once, we can cast it a lot. but it takes skills, and few can cast a ak quickly and silently. Remember how hermione only got partial damage because dolohov suck at non-verbal spell? that's it.

I think the idea of magical exhaustion is better, but your idea seems good too arkeus. To the patroni. I think most adults could cast a patronus without dementors if they really wanted. But I believe most are just too lazy to learn sth. like a patronus. They all think the aurors take care of everything and don't learn to properly defend themselves. And the guys from the DA can cast a patronus without a dementor. But with one it would be far more difficult and I really doubt that even one of them could cast one properly with a dementor a few meters away.

arkeus...yes, that's a good point, but as i said before, i consider Imperio as entirely dependant on will power. Basically, the way i see it, you smash into the other person's mind, and wrap your will around it. Once you're entirely wrapped around it, they cannot fight you off.

If you're trying to do it to someone with high willpower, then you have to whisper suggestions to them while completely encircling their mind, or they will fight you off. By whispering suggestions, you distract the person until you can entirely war around their mind, and then they're fucked.

Essentially, what i'm saying is that you cannot force yourself out of an Imperio once it has taken hold of you. This is the only way that the Wizengamot would actually give you any sympathy if you said "He imperio'd me!", because they would know that it isn't possible to fight off an Imperio once it's taken hold of you.

Now, what Crouch was doing was just casting the spell on them, i wouldn't put it as being draining. Just because its an unforgivabe doesn't mean that it has to take a lot of power out of you. It's an unforgivable because it makes you subject to another person's will. And another thing...only two of the 4 houses take a class at a time, so we're looking at him casting the curse perhaps 18 times only.

Now, with Peter casting the AK...he isn't a squib. It's not as if he casts a spell, and then immediately falls into shock for a week while he recuperates from the 'magic loss'. He can probably cast a bunch of spells before getting magical exhaustion.

I still endorse the Power-Battery theory..it works better to think of it that way. If you discard this theory, then all you're left with is that either:

    1) Wizards can cast spells for as long as they want...which kind of debases the whole 'powerful wizard' idea, since they can ALL keep going.

    2) They draw magic from their surroundings to cast. The power rankings are made on the basis of:
    - the efficiency with which they pull magic out of the atmosphere
    OR
    - the amount of magic they are able to pull from the atmosphere and put into each spell.

This just complicates things...it's far easier to think of the Power-Battery idea.

With Dolohov, yes, his curse was underpowered because he didn't vocalize it. I still consider him to be more powerful than Moody and McGonagall, but he could just have a problem casting silently. Whatever.

Hum... I guess saying hte random DE casting AK left and right in hbp wouldn't convince anyone because of where it's from? ah well... I still don't like the battery idea, because we have never had a recollection of harry being tired (remember in gof when he used accio for hours, trying to learn it?).
that's why i think there is no such thing as a "powerful" wizard. a skillfull one, yes. of course, that would be too close to saying hermione is efficient for tw third of you :ppp

Whenever Dumble casts a spell the hairs on the back of Harry's neck stand up, I think not only skill matters, but power as well. In OoTP Dumble was using his wand like winding it up, for example, he didn't just point and boom their was his spell, it was like he had to charge up then release when fighting Voldemort. Also, the spells used were so poweful and yet seemingly slowly cast, with the exception of the killing curses. They litterally were talking like it was over a cup of tea, which is a direct quote. I don't know about you guys, but that battle seemed like watching a movie where if you knew what spell was coming you had time to prepare for it and counter.

Harry, during potronus lessons, said making the shield potronus where it wasn't fully corporal felt the spell draining him. I think all wizards have magic inside them, which makes sence with the Dementors draining wizards of their magic, so they cannot escape Azkaban.

A dark wizard probably could cast AK like it were a stunner if he's experienced enough. Fake moody said everyone could cast it and he wouldn't get a bloody nose. I think AK is emotionaly based and moody believed nobody could cast enough hate to produce good results with it, not saying they wern't poweful enough, just not capable with the lack of hate.

Power Battery idea approved. Only thing in cannon that supports this theory, in my opinion.

Hum...Harry is tired during the patronus lessons because of the fake dementor.. he passed out on the train, too, remember.

And about the Ad/V duel, i would say that they need to really concentrate on their spells. Beside, i didn't say that some spells didn't require more power than others. it's just that i don't think it is a magical reservoir, but maybe harry either draws magic from outside, or else *creates* magic power from within his body, time and time again.

Yeah...he wasn't tired from magical exhaustion, though...he was tired form being exposed to the Dementor effect so much.
