I'm calling it right now, World War Z is going to suck.

Know why? Brad Pitt has been in one other film that is based on literary source material depicting a decade long conflict. Troy. And that movie sucked. Now, in this trailer we have what looks like a half-decent stereotypical zombie action movie. Unfortunately, World War Z the novel depicts a decade long conflict that doesn't resemble this movie at all.

    Fast zombies? Seriously?

Call the movie Fast Zombies Will Ruin Your Life, instead of World War Z. Titling this movie World War Z is like releasing the Star Wars films under the title Star Trek.

A fair opinion - the film was below average - but implying it's because it was unfaithful to the source material is an argument I'm tired of. It was Troy the Hollywood Blockbuster, and you got what you paid for, not The Iliad, the Caligula-style, Clash-of-the-Titans, Gods-among-men trippy arthouse nightmare of failed allegory that it could have been.

I could ramble endlessly on Troy and The Iliad, but I think the film actually hit the mark between X and Y on the head, in that it was distant enough from the source material to actually be, in its own way, faithful. In concept, they're polar opposites, and that duality is the entire theme of the original work. Ironically enough, it cameos in the narcissism of Pitt's Achilles.

The real problem wasn't in portrayal. It was in performance. The film simply didn't pull it off.

    /off topic

World War Z. I'm not disappointed in how far they've strayed - I think the dreadful, masturbatory docu-shite that a very faithful adaptation would have been might have marred the original. I'm instead disappointed that they strayed at all. Some things are best left alone.

My only hope is that it's not faithful enough to the source material to besmirch it. The further it strays from the original, the more I'll still be able to enjoy the book.

    Just like Troy.

Say what you want about Troy, there were some epic fight scenes.

And that's not the only literary work Pitts done with decades of conflict. Interview with a Vampire? Now that movie sucked.

Yeah, I've got some friends up in Glasgow where they did a lot of the filming, and apparently they just opened the doors to anyone who fancied being an extra. One of my mates is even on the trailer.

A trailer of Now You See Me.

Personally I love movies about illusionists and this one looks interesting. Well, it would be probably better without all these obvious CG effects, but it also has a brilliant cast including Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Woody Harrelson.

Eisenberg looks like a boss. He's really grown on me as an actor, I'll watch anything he's in.

Not gonna lie, I'm fucking pumped about World War Z. The old blind dude in Japan. The Redeker Plan. A-10s dropping BRRRRRRRRRRRRT at Yonkers. The Russian priests doing their Dr. Kevorkian thing. All of it. Which means if the movie even captures 70% of the book then I'll be grinning like an idiot the entire time.

Well, try not to get your hopes up too much. We'll probably be lucky if we get even a third of what's in the book.

Isn't the movie supposed to be a trilogy or something. I remember reading something like that.

By the way, did anyone see this when it came out two years ago?

    Max Brooks Interview

One of the better online author interviews I know of. A friend reminded me of it tonight and I'd completely forgotten about it, so thought I'd share. He is the sort of person I probably wouldn't get along with socially, but watching this made me like him so much.

    True dude.

It also offers interesting 'director's cut' insights into parts of WWZ that weren't included in the final book.

Edit: The best bit is when he answers the question about how it was to grow up with his Dad. Absolute genius.

    After Earth.

    Oblivion.

Two somehow similar movies about more civilized humans finding themselves on less civilized Earth.
